Mumbai: Mini Mathur is entering a new chapter of her career with a fresh audience, renewed visibility and a message she hopes extends far beyond her victory on Prime Video’s reality show Alliance. The former MTV VJ and Indian Idol host has emerged as the winner of the show, connecting strongly with younger viewers who may know little about her television journey from the 1990s.

For Mini, the response has been particularly meaningful because it has challenged assumptions about age, women and the kind of opportunities available to them in entertainment.

Speaking to ANI, Mini said the affection she has received following her Alliance win has been unlike anything she experienced earlier in her career.

“I just like to say that I have never experienced the kind of love that I am getting with just winning a reality show despite having had a lot of validation in my career for so many years,” she said, adding that she was grateful to younger audiences for embracing her personality and strategy.

Mini Mathur hopes her win changes how women are viewed

Mini believes her journey on Alliance can encourage viewers to reconsider the way they look at women as they grow older.

“I hope that you look at women in a different light because of this. I hope you don’t write off people because of their age,” she said.

She also spoke about the assumptions that can surround older women, particularly the idea that they may be physically or mentally less capable of taking on demanding challenges.

“I hope you don’t write off women who you think would be unfit or weak because at any age you can bring your body and your health and your mind back to when you were 20,” Mini said.

For her, being able to demonstrate that on a reality show has become an important part of the victory.

“I’ve never had self-doubt”

Mini said she has generally approached her career without allowing self-doubt to determine her choices. While she acknowledged that imposter syndrome can affect people in different professional situations, she believes her career has benefited from her willingness to change direction.

“I’ve never had self-doubt,” she said.

That willingness to evolve has taken her beyond television hosting. Mini has also moved into women’s health and founded Pauseitive, a platform connected to her interest in women’s health and menopause.

She said she had studied women’s health around menopause two years ago before starting the platform.

The transition came at a time when Mini felt traditional television opportunities were no longer offering the kind of creative challenge she wanted.

Why Mini Mathur said yes to Alliance

Mini revealed that she had rejected several reality-show offers in the past because she did not feel she fitted the conventional image associated with such programmes.

Alliance, however, offered something different.

“I’ve said no to many reality shows because I did not feel that I fit into that stereotype,” she explained.

The show’s emphasis on games and strategy changed her perspective. She also had an existing professional connection with creative head Priya Bhave, with whom she had previously worked on Indian Idol.

According to Mini, Bhave encouraged her to take the opportunity, telling her that the format would suit her.

That combination of a different concept and a familiar creative connection eventually convinced Mini to take the plunge.

Mini discovers a new generation of fans

One of the biggest surprises following Alliance has been the response from Gen Z and millennial viewers.

Mini’s earlier career included her time as an MTV VJ during the channel’s hugely influential late-1990s phase. She later became widely recognised as a television host, including through Indian Idol.

But many of the younger viewers who supported her on Alliance were unfamiliar with that history.

Mini said she has enjoyed watching a new generation discover her work and personality.

“I was not under a rock, I was right here,” she joked while describing the reaction from younger fans.

The response has also reinforced her belief that audiences are willing to embrace mature women when entertainment platforms give them meaningful roles.

“You can’t give me a side role”

For Mini, the larger issue is representation.

She believes women in their 50s should not automatically be limited to supporting characters or stereotypical roles. Instead, they should be given opportunities to lead stories and participate in formats where their experience and personality are central to the narrative.

“But people have to make shows where they showcase 50-year-old women in this light,” she said.

Mini argued that older women should not simply be included as side characters or offered roles that fail to make meaningful use of their abilities.

Her Alliance victory, she believes, demonstrates that there is an audience for precisely those kinds of personalities.

A career entering another phase

Mini Mathur’s Alliance victory has therefore become more than another reality-show achievement. It has introduced her to viewers who were born long after her MTV days and given her a new platform at a stage of life when many women in entertainment say opportunities can become narrower.

For Mini, the lesson is straightforward: experience should not be treated as a limitation.

Her hope is that audiences and content creators alike will recognise the value women can continue to bring as they grow older—and give them stories, challenges and opportunities that reflect that potential.
