Bollywood legend Madhuri Dixit celebrated her 59th birthday on May 15, and fans across the country continue to revisit memorable moments from the actor’s iconic journey in Hindi cinema.
From Tezaab and Saajan to Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and Dil To Pagal Hai, Madhuri became one of the biggest superstars of the 1990s. At the peak of her career, however, the actor surprised fans by stepping away from Bollywood after marrying cardiovascular surgeon Dr Shriram Nene in 1999.
Now, an old interview of the actress has resurfaced online in which she fondly recalled how Dr Nene initially had little idea about the scale of her stardom in India — and was not particularly interested in Bollywood films either.

During her appearance on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Madhuri spoke about the moment Dr Nene first truly realised her popularity.
Recalling their wedding reception, she shared:
“I think at our wedding reception. He was like, ‘Oh my God, there are so many people,’ and I told him that the queue doesn’t end there, it ends all the way there. He didn’t know how big a star I was.”
She added that Dr Nene, who was born in London and raised in the United States, was unfamiliar with Bollywood culture before meeting her.
“He had never experienced the full impact of that.”
Amitabh Bachchan Was The Only Star He Recognised
Madhuri further revealed that Dr Nene recognised only one Bollywood celebrity at their wedding reception.
“The only star he recognised at our wedding reception was Mr Amitabh Bachchan because he had watched Amar Akbar Anthony as a kid.”
The actress explained that her husband came from a completely different cultural and entertainment background.

The actor also laughed while recalling how Dr Nene reacted when she and his mother tried showing him one of her films.
“Me and his mom tried to show him one of my films and my song, and he was like, ‘Can’t we do something else? Let’s go out and do something.’”
Madhuri admitted that Dr Nene has never been deeply connected to Bollywood movies.
“He comes from a different sensibility, but he loved Devdas.”
Madhuri Dixit’s Life After Marriage
After marrying Dr Nene, Madhuri moved to Denver, Colorado, where she spent several years away from films focusing on family life and raising their sons, Arin and Ryan.
