Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon has opened up about the limitations she faced early in her career, revealing that she eventually grew tired of being offered roles built around the familiar “good girl” image. The actor also spoke about how female characters in Hindi cinema are becoming more layered, realistic and willing to make mistakes.
Kriti discussed the subject during an appearance on Kareena Kapoor’s podcast What Women Want, where the conversation turned to the kinds of characters she hopes to explore as an actor.
Kriti Sanon on Moving Beyond the ‘Good Girl’ Image
During the conversation, Kareena Kapoor recalled Kriti’s earlier comments about wanting to take on at least one role each year that pushes her beyond her comfort zone.
Reflecting on her early years in the industry, Kriti explained that actors do not always have access to a wide range of opportunities when they are starting out. She said she often had to select the best character from the limited roles available to her.
“For a very long time, it was like the good girl,” Kriti said, describing how women were frequently portrayed through what she called the male gaze. These characters were often coy, shy and morally upright, with their stories revolving around being protected or rescued.
The actor admitted that she eventually became bored with playing such parts.
“I was bored of doing the good girl parts,” she said, explaining that she wanted to explore different aspects of her personality through her performances. Kriti also reflected on how the idea of being a “good girl” had influenced her own life, making the opportunity to play more complicated characters particularly appealing.
Why Kriti Sanon Welcomes More Realistic Female Characters
Kriti believes the way women are written in films is changing, with more room for characters who are imperfect and emotionally complex.
She described it as “refreshing” to see filmmakers create women who feel more human rather than being confined to conventional ideas of right and wrong.
According to the actor, these characters can make mistakes, take questionable decisions and possess contradictions without being reduced to a simple label. Such roles offer performers greater scope to explore different emotions and motivations.

Her comments reflect a broader conversation about female representation in cinema, where audiences increasingly encounter women with their own ambitions, flaws and complicated personal choices.
Kriti Sanon on Playing an Unapologetic Woman in Do Patti
Kriti also spoke about her experience in Do Patti, the Netflix thriller in which she played a double role. The project gave her an opportunity to explore characters beyond the familiar, idealised female lead.
Playing women with different shades of personality allowed the actor to move away from the predictable expectations often associated with the traditional heroine. The film also marked another opportunity for her to take on a performance-driven role.
For Kriti, such projects offer the chance to experiment with characters who are not necessarily perfect or universally likeable, but who remain compelling because of their complexity.
Kriti Sanon’s Upcoming Film
Kriti was most recently associated with Cocktail 2, according to the supplied report. She is also set to headline a large-scale horror film backed by Maddock Films, although further details about the project are awaited.
As she continues to explore different genres and character types, Kriti’s comments suggest that she is keen to move beyond familiar roles and embrace performances that challenge audience expectations.
Her reflections also underline how the evolving portrayal of women on screen can create more opportunities for actors to experiment with characters who are flawed, unpredictable and recognisably human.
