Kid Rock has entered a new musical chapter with the release of “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King),” a Christian-themed single that arrives as the rock-rap artist prepares his next album, Halfway 2 Jesus.
The new song reflects the growing spiritual focus Kid Rock has recently discussed, marking a notable shift in subject matter for an artist whose career has long been associated with rock, rap, country influences and rebellious imagery.
Kid Rock Says the Song Came From a Late-Night Inspiration
Kid Rock, 55, recently explained that the new track came together unexpectedly during the early hours of the morning.
In a social media post, the musician described waking up at around 2 a.m. and writing the song shortly afterward.
“I got out of bed at 2 a.m. one morning, and about 30 minutes later, I had this song,” he said.
The song takes its title from James 1:17, a verse from the New Testament that speaks about every good and perfect gift coming from God.
Musically, the track retains some of the rock-oriented elements associated with Kid Rock, including prominent guitars, while its lyrics focus on Jesus and faith.
‘Halfway 2 Jesus’ Will Be Kid Rock’s Next Album
The single also offers a preview of Kid Rock’s upcoming album, Halfway 2 Jesus.
The album title was revealed through the description accompanying the song’s YouTube release. A representative for the musician told the Detroit Free Press that the release date for the album is expected to be announced soon.
The music video for “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)” is also set to feature a performance by children from Pakistan associated with Miraculous Love Kids, an organisation that provides musical outreach to vulnerable children in impoverished communities.
The collaboration adds an international element to Kid Rock’s latest Christian-focused project.
Kid Rock’s Recent Move Toward Christian Music
The new single follows another prominent step into Christian music earlier this year.
Kid Rock reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart with his version of Cody Johnson’s “’Til You Can’t.” He adapted the song with additional lyrics centred on Jesus and faith.
He performed the version during an appearance at Turning Point USA’s alternative Super Bowl halftime event in February.
Kid Rock has previously spoken about feeling spiritually compelled to make his forthcoming album, describing the project as something he felt “called to record.”
From ‘Rock N Roll Jesus’ to a New Spiritual Chapter
Kid Rock’s Christian-themed music represents an interesting development in a career that has frequently embraced provocative imagery and themes.
In 2007, he released the album Rock N Roll Jesus, whose title track used religious imagery while maintaining the rebellious tone that had characterised much of his music.
The new material takes a substantially different lyrical approach, placing Jesus and Christian faith more directly at the centre of the songs.
With “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)” now released and Halfway 2 Jesus on the horizon, Kid Rock appears to be exploring a more explicitly faith-driven side of his music while retaining elements of the rock sound that have defined his career.
