Anti-inflammatory diets have gained widespread attention in India after celebrities like Vidya Balan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Aamir Khan spoke openly about their benefits. Praised for helping manage weight, boost energy and support long-term health, the diet has become a favourite among fitness enthusiasts and social media influencers.

However, while most conversations focus on what to eat, fewer highlight how everyday habits can quietly undo the benefits. To understand where people go wrong, we spoke to Nicole Linhares Kedia, celebrity and sports nutritionist and integrated health coach—who works with Kiara Advani, Siddharth Malhotra, Shahid Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, and leading Indian cricketers including the Pandya brothers and Shreyas Iyer.

Understanding Inflammation: The Silent Saboteur

Nicole begins by clarifying a common misconception: inflammation itself isn’t bad.

“Inflammation is a natural defence mechanism. But when it becomes chronic, it can contribute to conditions like heart disease, diabetes and autoimmune disorders. One of the biggest drivers of persistent inflammation today is our diet and lifestyle,” she explains.

She points to processed foods, refined carbohydrates, excessive sugar, poor sleep, high caffeine intake and alcohol consumption as key contributors to ongoing inflammation. Cooking oils such as soybean, sunflower and safflower oil, when overused, can also tip the balance unfavourably.

Beyond food, Nicole notes that urban pollution, UV exposure, unmanaged stress and sedentary routines further fuel inflammatory responses—especially for people living in high-AQI cities.

The Hidden Mistakes People Make on Anti-Inflammatory Diets

Even those who follow the “right” food list often miss smaller habits that can quietly sabotage progress.

“Sometimes it’s not just what you eat, but how and when you eat. These small daily patterns can create a vicious cycle of inflammation,” Nicole says.

Here are the most common mistakes she sees:

1. Starting the Day With Coffee on an Empty Stomach

For many, coffee is non-negotiable—but timing matters.

“Drinking coffee first thing on an empty stomach can spike cortisol levels, which may increase inflammatory responses,” Nicole explains.

She suggests prioritising hydration or a light, balanced intake before caffeine.

2. Eating Too Close to Bedtime

Late-night meals disrupt digestion and sleep—both essential for inflammation control.

“Ideally, your last meal should be 3–4 hours before bedtime to allow proper digestion and recovery,” she advises.

3. Ignoring Sodium on Nutrition Labels

Salt intake often flies under the radar.

“Excess sodium from packaged foods, sauces, MSG and flavour enhancers not only raises inflammation but also increases blood pressure risk,” Nicole warns.

Mindful label reading is crucial, even for foods marketed as “healthy.”

4. Eating Too Fast or While Stressed

Speed matters as much as content.

“Eating in a rush or under stress can impair gut function, which directly influences inflammation,” Nicole notes.

Slowing down meals can significantly improve digestion and metabolic health.

Celebrity Diets Need Context, Not Copy-Paste

While celebrity transformations spark curiosity, experts caution against blindly replicating their routines.

Nicole emphasises that stars follow highly personalised plans, supported by medical testing, recovery protocols and professional monitoring.

“Sustainable health comes from consistency, not extremes,” she says. “Anti-inflammatory eating works best when paired with sleep, stress management and realistic habits.”

The Takeaway

Anti-inflammatory diets aren’t about quick fixes or trendy food lists. Their real impact lies in long-term habits, mindful eating and lifestyle balance. As celebrity nutritionist Nicole Linhares Kedia highlights, avoiding small but common mistakes can make the difference between temporary results and lasting health.
