Digestive disorders are often invisible, yet deeply disruptive. When actress Khushi Kapoor, in her early 20s, spoke openly about living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), it drew attention to a condition that millions experience quietly every day.

IBS is a common yet frequently misunderstood digestive disorder that affects how the gut functions rather than its physical structure. While it does not show up on routine scans or blood tests, its impact on daily life can be significant—ranging from chronic abdominal discomfort to unpredictable bowel habits.

By sharing her experience, Khushi Kapoor has helped bring much-needed awareness to a condition that is often dismissed or under-recognised, especially among young adults.

What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning the digestive tract appears normal but does not function optimally. It is characterised by recurring abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements, which may include diarrhoea, constipation, or both.

“IBS is strongly linked to the gut–brain axis,” explains Dr Krishna Awasthi, MD (General Medicine), Consultant Gastroenterologist, Bengaluru. “Because IBS does not appear on scans or standard tests, many patients feel unheard. But the symptoms are very real and can be debilitating.”

According to Dr Awasthi, rising stress levels, erratic routines, and unhealthy eating patterns are contributing to a growing number of IBS cases among young adults. Early recognition and lifestyle-focused management play a crucial role in controlling symptoms.

Eight Common but Overlooked Symptoms of IBS

1. Abdominal Pain or Cramping

Recurring stomach pain—often relieved after a bowel movement—is one of the most defining features of IBS. It may worsen after meals or during periods of stress.

2. Bloating and Excess Gas

Many people experience a persistent feeling of fullness or abdominal distension, even after small meals, due to heightened gut sensitivity.

3. Diarrhoea, Constipation, or Both

IBS can present as frequent loose stools, hard stools, or alternating bowel patterns, depending on the subtype.

4. Mucus in Stool

The presence of clear or white mucus during bowel movements, in the absence of inflammatory bowel disease, is a lesser-known IBS symptom.

5. Sudden Urgency

An urgent need to use the toilet—often shortly after eating—is commonly reported.

6. Feeling of Incomplete Bowel Emptying

Many individuals feel they have not fully emptied their bowels even after using the restroom.

7. Nausea or Indigestion

Upper digestive symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, or indigestion may also accompany IBS.

8. Symptoms Triggered by Stress

Because IBS is closely linked to the gut–brain connection, emotional stress and anxiety frequently trigger or worsen symptoms.

What Causes IBS?

The exact cause of IBS is not fully understood, but several contributing factors have been identified, including:

  • Increased gut sensitivity
  • Psychological stress and anxiety
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Irregular eating habits
  • Certain trigger foods
  • Disruptions in gut bacteria

Lifestyle factors often play a significant role in both the onset and persistence of symptoms.

Natural Ways to Help Manage IBS Symptoms

While IBS has no single cure, symptoms can often be managed effectively through consistent lifestyle adjustments:

  • Eat regular, balanced meals
  • Follow a gut-friendly or low-FODMAP diet if advised by a professional
  • Identify and avoid personal trigger foods
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Include fibre and probiotics gradually
  • Engage in regular physical activity
  • Practise stress-reducing techniques such as yoga or meditation
  • Prioritise quality sleep

Dr Awasthi emphasises that awareness, early diagnosis, and personalised lifestyle changes can significantly reduce flare-ups and improve quality of life.
