Katrina Kaif’s Postpartum Body Is Not Public Property: Why the Scrutiny Needs to Stop

Katrina Kaif faces scrutiny over her postpartum appearance after becoming a mother

Katrina Kaif has spent much of her career being celebrated for her appearance. From magazine covers and red carpets to films built around her image as a Bollywood beauty, public attention has often focused heavily on how she looks.

Yet when her body naturally changed after becoming a mother, that same attention took a far more uncomfortable turn.

Katrina welcomed her son with Vicky Kaushal in November 2025. Since then, she has largely stayed away from the spotlight while adjusting to motherhood. Fans repeatedly expressed how much they missed seeing her, and when she eventually began making public appearances again, the conversation quickly shifted from celebrating her return to scrutinising her postpartum appearance.

That raises a larger question: Why do people feel entitled to judge how a woman looks after she has given birth?

Katrina Kaif’s Postpartum Appearance Became a Subject of Public Debate

One of Katrina’s first major public appearances after becoming a mother came at filmmaker Kuku Kohli’s funeral in August. Comments about her appearance reportedly began circulating soon afterwards.

The scrutiny resurfaced during the Ambani family’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, when photographs of Katrina once again prompted social-media commentary about her body and appearance.

Instead of simply seeing a new mother attending a public event, sections of social media turned her appearance into something to be examined and compared with photographs from before pregnancy.

That impulse says more about society’s expectations of women than it does about Katrina.

Pregnancy changes the body. Childbirth changes it further. Recovery takes time, and there is no universal timetable by which every woman is expected to look exactly as she did before becoming pregnant.

A Woman Does Not Owe Anyone a ‘Bounce Back’

Among the comments targeting Katrina was one reportedly made by a doctor, who compared her appearance to that of Vicky Kaushal’s mother.

The comment is particularly jarring because medical knowledge makes it clear that pregnancy and childbirth involve significant physical changes. A woman’s body undergoes months of hormonal and physiological adjustments while supporting the development of a baby. After childbirth, recovery continues while the mother is also adapting to the demands of caring for a newborn.

There is no reason to assume that a few months after giving birth, a woman should automatically look like she did before pregnancy.

The phrase “bounce back” itself can be problematic. It suggests that pregnancy is a temporary interruption from which a woman should quickly return to an earlier version of herself.

But there is nothing inherently wrong with a postpartum body looking postpartum.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Faced Similar Scrutiny

Katrina is far from the first Bollywood actor to face intense commentary about her appearance after becoming a mother.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan experienced similar scrutiny following the birth of her daughter Aaradhya in 2011. Despite having spent years being described as one of the world’s most beautiful women and winning the Miss World title, public discussion after her pregnancy frequently centred on her weight and whether she had returned to her earlier appearance.

Photographs were analysed, her body became a subject of commentary and the question of her post-pregnancy weight overshadowed other aspects of her life and career.

The pattern is striking. A woman can spend years being celebrated for her beauty, but the moment her body changes, that same beauty can become a standard against which she is judged.

Kareena Kapoor Khan Has Spoken About the Reality of Postpartum Changes

Kareena Kapoor Khan has also spoken openly about the physical realities of pregnancy and motherhood.

After giving birth to her first child, Taimur, Kareena recalled looking at herself and seeing a version of herself that was “scarred, chubby, puffy, tired”. She has also discussed experiences such as swollen feet, dark circles, exhaustion and hormonal changes.

Her comments offered a reminder that even women who appear effortlessly glamorous on screen experience the ordinary physical realities of pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

The difference is that celebrities are often expected to conceal those realities almost immediately.

Why Is a Postpartum Body Still Treated Like a Problem?

There is a strange contradiction in the way motherhood is discussed.

Pregnancy is celebrated. A newborn is celebrated. Mothers are praised for their sacrifices. But when pregnancy leaves visible changes on a woman’s body, those changes can suddenly become something that needs to be explained, corrected or criticised.

Why?

A postpartum body is not a failed version of a pre-pregnancy body. It is simply a body that has undergone pregnancy and childbirth.

A woman may choose to exercise, change her diet or work towards a different level of fitness after giving birth. That should be her decision. But the choice should belong to her—not to strangers analysing photographs online.

Katrina Kaif Does Not Need to ‘Get Her Old Body Back’

The question should not be how quickly Katrina Kaif returns to the body she had before pregnancy.

Nor should Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have been expected to prove how quickly she could lose postpartum weight. Kareena Kapoor Khan did not owe anyone a perfectly polished appearance while dealing with exhaustion and hormonal changes.

The more important issue is why society continues to believe women owe the public a particular version of their bodies at all.

Katrina is a new mother. She is allowed to look different. She is allowed to take time. She is allowed to be tired, swollen, softer, heavier or simply unlike the person she was before pregnancy.

Her body is not a before-and-after photograph waiting to be completed.

It is not a public referendum.

And it certainly does not require approval from social media, strangers—or anyone else.
