Kareena Kapoor Khan’s “size zero” phase became one of Bollywood’s most defining pop-culture conversations, but her long-time dietician Rujuta Diwekar says the hype was entirely media-made. In a conversation with Janice Sequeira, Rujuta opened up about Kareena’s transformation for Tashan (2008), the misconceptions surrounding that phase, and why the actress continues to look effortlessly fit even in her 40s.
‘Size Zero’ Was Never Our Term, Says Rujuta Diwekar
Rujuta clarified that neither she nor Kareena used or promoted the now-famous label.
“Size zero is not a term that I or Bebo coined. It came from some media interview. That was the first time I even heard the phrase. She was just a young girl who got in good shape. There was no size difference. She shot Tashan and Jab We Met at the same time,”
she shared.
The transformation turned into cultural chatter because audiences weren’t used to seeing mainstream actresses openly talk about their diet — especially when that diet included everyday Indian meals.
Indian Food Was Always at the Heart of Kareena’s Diet
Kareena, who proudly enjoys Punjabi home-style food, helped demolish the myth that fitness requires starving or eliminating carbs. Rujuta recalled that their collaboration started much before the Tashan phase, and Kareena’s openness played a huge role in redefining Bollywood’s fitness narrative.

Rujuta said.
Ageless Fitness: Discipline, Consistency and a Balanced Life
According to Rujuta, what makes Kareena’s fitness journey special is her consistency and the way she approaches wellness beyond aesthetic goals.
“She still looks just as fresh and fit. That is what real health looks like — not just in your appearance but in your work, relationships, family life and how you carry yourself.”
Rujuta added that Kareena’s willingness to share her routines publicly helped dispel fad diets and brought Indian food back into mainstream wellness conversations.
Kareena Never Starved Herself — She Ate Parathas for Breakfast
In a discussion with Vicky Kaushal for The Hollywood Reporter India, Kareena had already revealed that even during her so-called “size zero” period, she enjoyed her staple Punjabi breakfast: parathas with white makkhan.
Her diet, Rujuta emphasised, was rooted in nutrient-rich Indian meals — not deprivation.
