Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan recently opened up about the unexpected acting journey of his daughter Kalyani Priyadarshan, revealing that he never imagined she would eventually pursue a career in cinema.
Today, Kalyani is widely recognised as a leading actor in South Indian films and recently gained major attention with her role in Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which reportedly became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films, earning over ₹156 crore net in India and crossing ₹300 crore worldwide.
An unexpected entry into films
According to Priyadarshan, Kalyani showed little interest in the film industry while growing up. Unlike many star kids, she rarely visited film sets and instead focused on academics.
She eventually chose to study architecture, staying away from the world of cinema for several years.

Add Hunterfly on GoogleHowever, a conversation with veteran Telugu actor Nagarjuna Akkineni changed the course of her career. Priyadarshan recalled that Nagarjuna had asked whether Kalyani would consider working in films.
At the time, the filmmaker reportedly told the actor that his daughter had no acting experience and would not be able to perform on screen.
Kalyani decided to take the chance
Despite her father’s doubts, Kalyani decided to give acting a try. She reportedly told him that she had nothing to lose and could always return to her architecture career if things did not work out.
Another challenge she faced was language. Having grown up outside Kerala, she initially could not speak Malayalam. Determined to succeed, she learned the language and worked toward establishing herself in the industry.
Priyadarshan noted that this determination reflects the mindset of the younger generation, who pursue their goals with strong commitment.

Interestingly, Priyadarshan revealed that he and Kalyani rarely discuss their work with each other. According to him, they belong to different eras of filmmaking and prefer to maintain that professional distance.
He also admitted that he has only watched a few of her films and often relies on positive word-of-mouth before deciding to see them.
The filmmaker even joked that attending his daughter’s film premieres is not something he prioritises.

On the professional front, Priyadarshan is preparing for the release of Bhooth Bangla, which marks his reunion with actor Akshay Kumar after 14 years. The horror-comedy is scheduled to hit theatres on April 10, 2026, and also features Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Wamiqa Gabbi.
Meanwhile, Kalyani is expected to return to the franchise with Lokah Chapter 2, which will reportedly feature Tovino Thomas in a leading role.
Her journey from architecture student to successful actor continues to stand out as an example of determination and adaptability in the film industry.
