Jaipur, Rajasthan: A roadside clearance operation conducted ahead of a VIP convoy movement in Jaipur has come under scrutiny after a woman street vendor sustained serious burn injuries during an altercation involving authorities and roadside vendors.

The incident, which occurred near Mahal Road in Jaipur’s Jagatpura area on June 19, has sparked debate over the treatment of small vendors during administrative drives and prompted calls for accountability from political leaders and local residents.

Vendor Injured While Preparing Food Stall

According to officials and family members, the injured woman, identified as Reshu Gupta, was preparing to set up a momo cart near the Akshaya Patra Temple when authorities began clearing roadside stalls ahead of an expected VIP movement.

Family members allege that a dispute broke out when vendors requested additional time to remove the cart safely because cooking equipment and containers of hot water were still being used. During the confrontation, boiling water reportedly spilled, leaving Gupta with burn injuries on multiple parts of her body, including her chest, shoulder and thighs.

She was subsequently taken for medical treatment, while relatives sought action against those they believe were responsible for the incident.

Conflicting Accounts Emerge

Authorities have acknowledged the incident but say the exact sequence of events remains under investigation.

Police officials stated that personnel were carrying out a routine roadside clearance exercise to ensure smooth passage along the designated VIP route. However, investigators are examining whether standard safety precautions were followed during the operation.

Officials noted that statements from witnesses and those involved present differing versions of what happened. As a result, investigators are reviewing available evidence, including CCTV footage from the area.

Jully described the case as deeply concerning and called for a thorough investigation. He argued that administrative actions linked to VIP movements should not compromise the safety or livelihoods of ordinary citizens, particularly small business owners who depend on daily earnings.

He also questioned whether sufficient precautions were taken while removing roadside vendors and urged authorities to ensure accountability if wrongdoing is found.
