Sony Entertainment Television is bringing back some of the most recognisable contestants from Indian Idol for its upcoming 17th season, titled Indian Idol: Legends Return. The new season will premiere on October 17, with Himesh Reshammiya returning to the judging panel.
The channel announced the premiere date on Saturday alongside a new promo introducing the concept. The upcoming season will also stream on Sony LIV, allowing viewers to watch the competition digitally alongside its television broadcast.
Unlike a conventional new season built around an entirely fresh batch of singers, Legends Return brings several familiar faces from previous editions back into the competition.
Himesh Reshammiya Returns as Judge
Himesh Reshammiya will once again take his place on the judging panel as the new season puts former contestants back in the spotlight.
In the promotional video, Himesh describes the upcoming competition as the biggest showdown in the show’s history.
“I am bringing the biggest showdown ever witnessed in the history of Indian Idol. Let’s begin.”
The promo then introduces singers who have previously competed on the show, setting up a season built around second chances, familiar rivalries and the challenge of proving themselves once again.
Himesh further raises the stakes by telling viewers:
“These stars of Indian Idol will prove themselves once again. Because winning once is not enough. You must win again and again.”
Indian Idol Legends Return Contestants
The new season features a mix of winners, runners-up and finalists from different editions of Indian Idol.
Among the returning singers is Abhijeet Sawant, who won the inaugural season of the reality competition. His return brings one of the franchise’s earliest champions back into the spotlight.
The lineup also includes:
- Salman Ali — Indian Idol Season 10 winner
- Amit Sana — Season 1 runner-up
- Mohd. Danish — Season 12 finalist
- Bidipta Chakraborty — Season 13 finalist
- Anshika Chonkar — Season 16 runner-up
- Myscmme Basu — Season 16 finalist
- Manraj Veer — Season 16 runner-up
- Tanishk Shukla — Season 16 runner-up
The return of singers from different generations of the franchise gives the season a built-in history, with contestants who have already experienced the pressure of the Indian Idol stage now facing the competition again.
When and Where to Watch Indian Idol: Legends Return
Indian Idol: Legends Return will premiere on October 17 on Sony Entertainment Television.
New episodes will air every Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.
The season will also be available to stream on Sony LIV, giving viewers a digital option alongside the television broadcast.
What Happened in Indian Idol Season 16?
The previous season of Indian Idol was won by Jyotirmayee Nayak, who took home a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh.
Season 16 was hosted by Aditya Narayan, while Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani and Badshah served as judges.
The return of several Season 16 contestants in Legends Return adds another layer to the new season, as singers who recently competed on the show now get another opportunity to establish themselves.
Why Legends Return Is Different
The premise of Indian Idol: Legends Return shifts the focus from discovering completely new voices to testing singers who have already experienced the franchise.
That creates a different kind of competition. The returning contestants already know the stage, the pressure of weekly performances and the expectations associated with the Indian Idol name.
The question now is whether previous winners and finalists can once again stand out when placed alongside other familiar performers.
With Himesh Reshammiya returning as a judge and singers from multiple seasons coming together, Legends Return is positioning itself as a celebration of the show’s history while turning that history into a fresh musical contest.
