Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound may have fallen short of an Oscar nomination, but its journey has reignited a larger conversation about how Indian cinema engages with global awards — and what truly constitutes international success.

After earning critical acclaim at home and abroad, Homebound was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars 2026. Backed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese and featuring a cast led by Vishal Jethwa, Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, the film competed in the Best International Feature Film category.

When the final nominations were announced on January 22, Homebound failed to make the cut — ending India’s Oscar hopes for the year, much like Laapataa Ladies did in 2025.

Industry insiders, however, say the snub tells a deeper story about the global awards ecosystem rather than the film’s quality.

“One Award Doesn’t Define a Film”

Film producer and trade analyst Girish Johar urged perspective, calling Homebound a prestigious and accomplished film regardless of the outcome.

“It does not take anything away from the film itself. The Oscars are prestigious, yes, but they are still just one award platform,” Johar said.

Veteran trade expert Ramesh Bala echoed the sentiment, noting that simply reaching the Oscar shortlist is rare for Indian films.

“Not many Indian movies come this close. Many are eliminated in early rounds. Homebound travelled far, reached global festivals, and earned visibility in Hollywood — that itself is a big win,” he said.

Bala also pointed out that Scorsese’s backing significantly boosted the film’s international reach, ensuring it was seen by influential global audiences.

Why Homebound Missed the Nomination

Not all analysts viewed the outcome as surprising.

Trade commentator Sumit Kadel argued that the film’s subject matter may have worked against it.

“Stories of oppression are powerful, but they lack novelty for the Academy. Similar narratives have been told repeatedly across global cinema,” he said.

Kadel also highlighted a long-standing issue with India’s Oscar campaigns.

“Winning an Oscar is not just about quality. It requires massive lobbying, sustained international campaigning, and industry networking. Very few Indian filmmakers have the resources or strategy to do that effectively,” he added.

Will Oscar Snubs Discourage Indian Filmmakers?

Experts largely say no.

Johar believes most filmmakers are not chasing the Oscars aggressively in the first place.

“Recognition from audiences and peers matters more to many creators. If your work is strong, awards will eventually follow,” he said.

Bala, however, suggested a structural shift in strategy.

“Indian cinema must focus on premiering at major festivals like Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Berlin first. Awards momentum builds there. Without that noise, Oscar nominations become much harder,” he explained.

He also noted that international reviews and festival wins create organic visibility that awards bodies respond to over time.

A Festival Darling, If Not an Oscar Nominee

Homebound had a strong international run:

  • Cannes Film Festival 2025 – Premiered in Un Certain Regard, received a long standing ovation
  • Toronto International Film Festival – Second runner-up for International People’s Choice Award

While it did not win at Cannes, its consistent presence at top-tier festivals cemented its global credibility.

Out of the Oscars, In for the National Awards?

Despite missing the Academy nod, trade experts believe Homebound could emerge as a strong contender at India’s National Film Awards.

With or without Oscar recognition, Homebound has achieved something arguably more important — proving that deeply rooted Indian stories can travel globally when told with honesty and craft.

For Indian cinema, the message is clear: the journey matters as much as the trophy.
