The Duchess of Edinburgh brought understated autumn elegance to a poignant royal engagement in Staffordshire, pairing a navy Emilia Wickstead dress with a statement Alexander McQueen blazer.
Sophie, 61, attended REME Memorial Day at the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens in Lichfield on Thursday. The emotional ceremony honoured the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, with the Duchess visibly moved during the proceedings.
For the occasion, Sophie opted for a refined navy ensemble that balanced formal dressing with practical autumn tailoring.
Duchess Sophie’s Alexander McQueen blazer steals the spotlight
The Duchess layered her Emilia Wickstead navy dress with an Alexander McQueen blazer from a past season, reportedly worth around £2,000.
The single-breasted jacket featured lightly padded shoulders and polished gold buttons, giving the otherwise streamlined outfit a structured finish.
A tailored blazer has long been a reliable choice for members of the royal family, particularly for formal daytime engagements. Sophie’s decision to keep the colour palette consistent across her dress and jacket created a sophisticated, coordinated look that was appropriate for the commemorative occasion.
She completed the outfit with floral gold earrings by Giulia Barela, knee-high boots from L.K.Bennett and a structured top-handle bag by Sophie Habsburg.
The combination of tailored separates, classic accessories and a deep navy palette gave the Duchess a polished autumn wardrobe formula without appearing overly elaborate for a remembrance event.
Sophie showcases her shorter blonde hairstyle
The royal also continued to showcase her recently updated hairstyle.
Sophie debuted a shorter blonde bob in July after having around four inches cut from her previously longer hair. The new length falls above the collarbone and has since been styled in several different ways.
At the Groundswell Regenerative Agriculture Festival at Lannock Farm, where she first revealed the shorter cut, Sophie wore her hair in a noticeably lighter blonde shade.
Since then, she has experimented with waves, curls and flicked ends, demonstrating the versatility of the shorter style.
The Duchess had maintained longer hair for more than a decade, although she previously wore a shorter hairstyle in 2011.
Duchess Sophie becomes emotional at REME ceremony
While Sophie’s outfit attracted attention, the occasion itself was centred on remembrance and military service.
The Duchess was visibly emotional during the ceremony and was photographed shedding a tear during a presentation.
The event marked the 84th birthday of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. A new memorial centrepiece, created by REME metalsmiths, was also dedicated during the proceedings.
Sophie has a particularly significant connection to the Corps. She became Colonel-in-Chief of REME in 2022, taking over the role previously held by Prince Philip for more than five decades.
Her attendance at the memorial event therefore combined her official military responsibilities with a deeply personal moment of remembrance.
Sophie’s evolving royal style
Over recent years, the Duchess of Edinburgh has developed a wardrobe that frequently combines established British designers with practical, polished separates.
Her latest appearance demonstrated how a classic blazer can transform a formal daytime outfit while remaining suitable for a solemn royal engagement. The Alexander McQueen jacket added structure to her navy dress, while gold jewellery and knee-high boots provided subtle finishing touches.
The overall look reflected Sophie’s increasingly streamlined approach to royal dressing, with tailoring taking centre stage while the emotional significance of the occasion remained the focus.
