Actor Divya Dutta is using her latest project to spotlight a subject that often remains unspoken in mainstream conversations. Her recent show Chiraiya, created by Divy Nidhi Sharma, explores themes of patriarchy, consent, and the emotional realities within marriages.

In a recent interaction, the National Award-winning actor spoke about the importance of initiating conversations around these issues and taking responsibility for change at an individual level.

“Change begins with us”

Divya emphasised that people often avoid introspection by placing responsibility elsewhere. She highlighted that meaningful change must start within families and communities.

She explained that the core idea of Chiraiya is to examine everyday behaviour—how elders, neighbours, and family members contribute to shaping mindsets. According to her, many individuals grow up believing certain roles and behaviours are unquestionable, and unless those ideas are challenged, progress remains limited.

Power of small emotional support

Talking about audience reactions, Divya shared that viewers have connected not only with the central theme but also with the emotional layers of relationships shown in the series.

She pointed out that even small gestures—such as a partner expressing support or simply being present—can have a significant impact. These moments, she believes, form the foundation of trust and understanding within a relationship.

Addressing internalised patriarchy

Divya also reflected on how deeply ingrained societal conditioning affects everyone. She noted that even individuals who consider themselves progressive may unknowingly carry internalised biases.

She discussed how traditional roles assigned to men and women continue to influence expectations within households. The idea that certain responsibilities belong only to one gender, she said, still persists and needs to be questioned.

Changing roles in modern relationships

Highlighting gradual shifts, Divya observed that many women today are redefining societal expectations by balancing careers, relationships, and personal choices on their own terms.

She stressed that there is no one-size-fits-all model for relationships. Instead of following rigid patterns, partners should decide what works best for them based on mutual understanding and respect.

Reflecting on her own life, Divya spoke about the challenges she faced while choosing a career in acting. Standing firm in her decisions required determination, something she now often shares during her motivational sessions.
