Actor and digital creator Disha Madan recently opened up about her postpartum journey, revealing the traditional foods that supported her recovery after childbirth.
The postpartum phase can be both joyful and physically demanding for new mothers. For Disha, however, it was also something she genuinely looked forward to — largely because of the nourishing meals prepared at home.
Speaking about her experience, Disha shared that her mother closely monitored her diet after delivery. Determined to recover well and regain strength, she followed the plan diligently.
Her meals included comforting South Indian staples such as pepper rasam, sabaki soppu (dill leaves), generous amounts of ghee, mildly salty dishes, and menthe dosa (fenugreek dosa). She admitted that while such foods may feel “heating” for the body in everyday situations, she thoroughly enjoyed them during postpartum recovery.

Medical experts emphasize that nutrition plays a crucial role after childbirth.
According to Anjana Singh, Director & HOD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Fortis Hospital Noida, new mothers require an additional 500 calories per day — roughly 1,800 to 2,200 kcal daily — depending on their body type and breastfeeding status.
She recommends a balanced diet rich in:
- Proteins
- Calcium
- Vitamins
- Fluids
- High-fibre carbohydrates
- Low-fat dairy
- Fruits and vegetables
- Galactagogues (foods that support breast milk production)
Rasam, a staple in Disha’s diet, contains nutrients such as thiamine, folic acid, vitamins A and C, and minerals including potassium, iron and magnesium. Meanwhile, fenugreek seeds (menthe) are widely known as a natural galactagogue that may support lactation.
Dr Singh adds that recovery — whether after a normal delivery or caesarean section — should remain the primary focus, alongside breastfeeding support.

The Role of Ghee in Postpartum Recovery
Nutritionist Bhakti Kapoor, founder of Healthy High in Mumbai, explains that ghee can offer benefits when consumed in moderation.
Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, ghee supports metabolism and helps the body convert fat into energy efficiently. It also aids the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K, which are essential for bone strength, immunity and hormonal balance.
However, experts caution that moderation is key. Ghee should be part of a balanced diet combined with light physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits.
