Before Deepika Padukone became a household name with her Bollywood debut in ‘Om Shanti Om’, she had already made a mark as a model and had even worked in South Indian cinema. Despite receiving multiple film offers during her early career, Deepika chose to wait until the timing felt right, a decision that shaped her journey into stardom.
Why Deepika Waited Before Entering Bollywood
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Deepika shared insights into her early career, stating that the transition from modeling to films happened swiftly. “Honestly, it all happened so quickly that sometimes it feels like a blur. Technically, I modelled for only two years, and by then the film industry had already started reaching out,” she said.
She recalled her hectic schedule filled with runway shows, print shoots, and television commercials, leaving little time to pause and process the attention. “Before I knew it, I was on a film set, and I didn’t even have time to process it. When I look back, I think it all unfolded at the right time,” Deepika added.
Turning Down Offers Because She Felt ‘Not Ready’
Deepika revealed that during her modeling days, many producers and directors actively pursued her for film projects. However, she chose to politely decline offers, feeling unprepared for the film industry. “A lot of producers and directors were pursuing me for movies. But I wasn’t ready for it,” she shared.

I’m still grateful for those opportunities. The timing of ‘Om Shanti Om’ felt right,” Deepika said.
From Newcomer to Confident Star
Reflecting on her early mindset, Deepika said she always knew she belonged in films, even without knowing how her journey would unfold. “Back then, I was almost oblivious. Whether it was walking the ramp for the first time or being on a film set, I was learning,” she noted.
Deepika also mentioned that her learning continues, albeit at a higher level. “Now it’s about how to get better, how to do things differently. The learning never stops; it just evolves,” she explained. Over the years, she has grown more self-assured and clearer about her career and personal goals.
