Bipasha Basu Recalls Being Warned Against ‘Jism’: ‘They Said I Would Be Finished’

Bipasha Basu has looked back on one of the biggest gambles of her early Bollywood career — saying she was repeatedly advised against starring in the 2003 thriller Jism.

The actress, who played Sonia Khanna opposite John Abraham, recalled in a recent conversation with Elle India that several people in the film industry believed the movie’s erotic subject matter could damage her professional prospects.

Bipasha, however, saw the project differently. She said she understood that Jism was intended for an adult audience and was drawn to the complexity of the character she was being offered.

Bipasha Basu Was Warned That Jism Could End Her Career

Looking back at the decision, Bipasha said people around her were concerned about the impact the film could have on her career.

“Everybody in the business told me, ‘Do not do this film.’ They said I would be finished if I did something which had a little bit of erotica,” the actress recalled in her interview with Elle India.

At the time, Bipasha was still establishing herself in Hindi cinema. Taking on a film built around an adult relationship and sensual themes was therefore a significant professional choice.

But the actress said she was comfortable with the nature of the story.

Why Bipasha Chose Jism Anyway

Rather than viewing the film simply through its erotic elements, Bipasha said she considered it an adult love story.

“And my take was that I’m an adult. It’s an adult love story. It is made as an adult film. It is not for the kids,” she said.

Her decision was also influenced by the character of Sonia.

Bipasha explained that she enjoyed the different shades of the role and felt strongly that she wanted to play the character.

“I really enjoyed the shades of Sonia in that film, and I just knew that I had to do it,” she said.

That conviction ultimately led her to take the role despite the reservations expressed by people in the industry.

What Was Jism About?

Released in 2003, Jism was an erotic thriller directed by Amit Saxena and written by Mahesh Bhatt.

The film followed Sonia Khanna, played by Bipasha, as she becomes involved with Kabir Lal, portrayed by John Abraham.

Kabir is drawn into a complicated relationship with Sonia, who is married to the wealthy Rohit Khanna, played by Gulshan Grover.

The film was produced by Pooja Bhatt and Sujit Kumar Singh.

For John Abraham, Jism also represented an important milestone: it marked his Hindi film debut.

Jism Became an Important Film for Bipasha

The concerns surrounding Jism did not translate into the career-ending outcome that some people had predicted.

Instead, the film became one of the projects that helped strengthen Bipasha’s image as an actress willing to take on bold and unconventional roles.

She had already attracted attention through films such as Ajnabee and Raaz, but Jism gave her a character that demanded a very different screen presence.

Sonia was seductive, ambitious and morally complicated, allowing Bipasha to explore a darker side of her acting persona.

The Film’s Box Office Performance

Despite the controversy and concerns surrounding its subject, Jism performed well commercially.

According to Box Office India, the film recorded an India net collection of around Rs 8.14 crore, while its worldwide gross was reported at approximately Rs 13.41 crore.

Its commercial performance demonstrated that audiences were willing to embrace an adult-oriented thriller at a time when such subjects were still relatively uncommon in mainstream Hindi cinema.

The film subsequently developed a lasting place in conversations around Bipasha’s career.

Jism Also Became a Defining Chapter in John Abraham’s Career

For John Abraham, the film had significance beyond its subject matter because it introduced him to Hindi-film audiences as a lead actor.

His pairing with Bipasha became particularly popular, both on screen and off screen.

The two later appeared together in other films, including Dhoom and Viruddh… Family Comes First, while their relationship became a major subject of entertainment coverage during that period.

Jism, however, remains the film that brought them together professionally.

Bipasha’s Decision Reflected a Willingness to Take Risks

Looking back, Bipasha’s comments reveal that she was aware of the potential consequences before accepting the role.

The decision was not based on ignorance of the controversy surrounding the film. She knew the subject could attract criticism and that some people believed it could affect the trajectory of her career.

She also moved into the streaming space with the 2020 thriller Dangerous, which marked her OTT debut.

Her career has therefore continued far beyond the fears expressed to her before Jism.
