A Bengaluru-based woman has triggered an online debate about gender bias and financial independence after sharing how her achievement was casually dismissed by a friend.

Anu, who recounted the incident on X, explained that the episode unfolded shortly after she purchased her first iPhone while she was in a relationship. When she met a friend a few days later, his reaction caught her off guard.

“Sahi hai bhai, bande ne phone dila diya” (Nice, your boyfriend bought you a phone), he said, assuming it was a gift.

Surprised by the comment, Anu asked why he thought she hadn’t bought it herself. According to her, his reply was even more startling: “Tera banda ameer hai, it’s pretty obvious why you chose him.”

A Comment That Sparked Reflection

What made the remark more upsetting, she wrote, was that the friend had known her for years. He was aware that she frequently paid bills when they went out, especially during a time when he was unemployed. He also knew she was uncomfortable accepting expensive gifts.

“I just kept staring at him, horrified about the way he thinks,” she shared in her post.

Later, when she discussed the incident with another close friend, she discovered that similar assumptions had been made about her as well. That conversation led Anu to question a broader social mindset.

“Why, as a woman, are our achievements blurred out once a man is involved?” she wrote. She added that many women independently purchase homes, cars, fund their travels, and support their families — yet their accomplishments are often attributed to male partners.

We both were dating when I bought my first iPhone. I met a friend two days after and his first statement was “Sahi hai bhai, bande ne phone dila diya”

I looked at him curiously and asked that why did he think it’s a gift from my guy and not something I have brought. His reply… pic.twitter.com/w4XjBGFhOQ

Social Media Reacts

Her thread quickly gained traction, with many women sharing comparable experiences. Several users admitted they avoid accepting expensive gifts or insist on splitting bills to prevent judgment.

One user commented that accepting costly presents often comes with the pressure of being perceived as financially dependent. Others noted that such remarks are common, particularly from male acquaintances who assume that luxury purchases must be funded by a partner.

Another user shared that when she mentioned having issues with her phone, a friend jokingly suggested she “date a guy” who could buy her a new one — highlighting how deeply ingrained such stereotypes remain.

A Larger Conversation on Financial Autonomy

The incident has reignited discussions about women’s financial autonomy and the subtle ways in which independence is questioned. While progress has been made in economic participation and career growth, social perceptions often lag behind.

Anu’s post reflects a recurring frustration voiced by many women — that their success, purchasing power, and career achievements are sometimes overshadowed by assumptions tied to relationships.

The conversation continues to evolve online, as users call for a shift in mindset that recognises women’s financial independence without attaching it to someone else’s wealth.
