Taapsee Pannu and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha have teamed up once again for their third collaboration, titled Assi. After delivering socially driven films like Mulk and Thappad, the duo returns with a courtroom drama that has already generated strong critical response ahead of its February 20 theatrical release.
Co-starring Kani Kusruti, the film has drawn appreciation for its performances and hard-hitting narrative. Backed by Benaras Media Works, Assi has also secured its digital streaming partner.
Assi OTT Release Details
Following its theatrical run, Assi is set to stream on ZEE5. As per reports, the courtroom drama is expected to premiere on April 17. However, the makers have not yet issued an official confirmation regarding the final OTT release date.
The film also features Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, Naseeruddin Shah and Supriya Pathak in key and special appearances. Renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra has overseen the casting for the project.

Assi follows the story of a woman named Parima, who survives a traumatic assault. The narrative then shifts to the legal battle led by Taapsee’s character, Raavi, who fights in court to secure justice for the survivor.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub portrays Vinay, Kumud Mishra appears as Kartik, and Manoj Pahwa plays Deepraj in the intense courtroom proceedings. The film blends legal drama with social commentary, continuing the filmmaker’s tradition of issue-based storytelling.
Taapsee on Women-Led and Unconventional Films
In a recent interaction with PTI, Taapsee expressed concern about the diminishing space for women-led and unconventional films in mainstream cinema. She noted that commercial filmmaking often follows established templates, leaving little room for narratives that deviate from the formula.
The actress also challenged the assumption that such films will automatically find a safe home on streaming platforms. According to her, OTT services are increasingly focused on attracting mass audiences, often mirroring theatrical trends.
Taapsee emphasised that unless audiences actively support these films, stories centred around strong female protagonists may struggle to survive in the current entertainment landscape.
