Anurag Kashyap and Shubhra Shetty Have No Plans to Marry; She Explains Why

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and Shubhra Shetty have been together for years, but marriage is not on their agenda. In a recent conversation with Janice Sequeira, Shubhra opened up about their relationship, her views on marriage and how her parents responded when they first met Kashyap.

Shubhra, who is significantly younger than the filmmaker, said marriage is simply not something she believes in. For the couple, being together does not necessarily require a formal marriage.

Shubhra explained that her decision is rooted in her personal views about marriage rather than any issue within their relationship.

She has indicated that marriage is not an institution she personally believes in, which is why she and Kashyap have chosen not to make it part of their relationship.

The couple’s age difference has also been discussed publicly over the years. Kashyap has previously spoken about becoming more conscious of their age gap as he grew older, while Shubhra has maintained her own perspective on their relationship.

Despite public curiosity about whether they would eventually marry, Shubhra’s comments make it clear that marriage is not something the couple is currently pursuing.

Shubhra also recalled how her parents reacted when they learned about her relationship with Kashyap.

According to her, she did not have to persuade her parents to accept her decision. Instead, they met the filmmaker and developed their own opinion about him.

Kashyap has previously joked about his relationship with Shubhra’s parents, pointing out that they are only a few years younger than him and describing them humorously as his “friends”.

Shubhra also shared an amusing description of how her mother views Kashyap.

“My mom calls him a bakra, because she said he is stupid enough to be with you. She thinks he is like a henpecked husband,” she said.

She added that her parents ultimately made their own decision after meeting him.

“My parents did a very good job. I didn’t convince them. They met him,” Shubhra said.

How Shubhra Shetty met Anurag Kashyap

Shubhra also opened up about the period of Kashyap’s life when they first became acquainted.

She recalled that he was in a particularly positive phase around the time they met, with the filmmaker involved in filmmaking while also spending time reading and watching movies.

The two connected through their shared interests, particularly books and cinema.

“It was his pre-Bombay Velvet release and post-film shooting; he was in a very good phase. He was very fit, happy, reading books, and watching films. So, we bonded over all those things,” Shubhra said.

She also recalled Kashyap telling her that if she had met him several years earlier, she might not have dated him.

“He used to say that if I had met him a few years ago, I wouldn’t have dated him, but I don’t think that’s true. I caught him one little golden window, when he was at his best,” she said.

Her account offers a glimpse into the circumstances surrounding the beginning of their relationship, particularly their shared interest in films and books.

Shubhra worked at Phantom Films

At the time, Shubhra was working as an assistant director at Phantom Films, the production company associated with Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena.

Although Kashyap was a leading figure at the company, Shubhra said she did not directly report to him.

She also recalled that the workplace was supportive of their relationship.

Their professional association therefore existed alongside their personal relationship, although Shubhra’s comments indicate that there was no direct reporting relationship between the two.

Anurag Kashyap’s previous marriages

Before his relationship with Shubhra Shetty, Anurag Kashyap was married twice.

He was first married to editor Aarti Bajaj. The couple were married for six years before their relationship ended in 2009. They have a daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap.

Kashyap later married actor Kalki Koechlin in 2011. Their marriage ended after four years.

His relationship with Shubhra represents a different approach to partnership, with the couple choosing not to marry.

Shubhra’s latest comments suggest that the absence of marriage is a conscious decision rather than something the couple has simply postponed.

Their relationship has continued to attract public interest because of the couple’s age gap, Kashyap’s established career in Indian cinema and Shubhra’s own background in filmmaking.

For now, however, Shubhra’s position on marriage appears straightforward: she does not believe in it, and the couple has no plans to change that.
