Ana de Armas headlines J Blakeson’s psychological thriller Sweat

After commanding attention in the John Wick spin-off Ballerina and Ron Howard’s survival drama Eden, Ana de Armas is set to headline a new psychological thriller titled Sweat, where she will portray a rising fitness influencer navigating the dark underbelly of online fame.

The film will be directed by J Blakeson, known for acclaimed titles such as I Care A Lot, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, The 5th Wave, and Culprits. Sweat is based on Magnus von Horn’s 2020 drama-thriller of the same name, a film that was slated to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Dark Take on Social Media Fame

In Sweat, de Armas plays Emma Kent, an ambitious fitness influencer desperate to reach the level of success enjoyed by social media superstar Kat Highbrook. What begins as a carefully curated online persona soon unravels when Emma’s encounter with Highbrook takes a troubling turn.

As her world spirals out of control, Emma is forced into an unsettling arrangement with Trent, an obsessive admirer whose devotion becomes increasingly dangerous. The film explores how far its protagonist is willing to go in pursuit of fame—blurring the lines between validation, exploitation, and control in the influencer economy.

With its themes of parasocial relationships, online obsession, and the psychological cost of digital celebrity, Sweat positions itself as a timely and unsettling commentary on modern internet culture.

Strong Creative and Production Backing

AGC Studios is attached to finance and co-produce the film, while also handling international sales. The project is being produced by Guy Stodel under his banner Rosto Inc, alongside J Blakeson through Crimple Beck, and AGC Studios CEO Stuart Ford.

Production is scheduled to begin on March 30, with filming set to take place across the United Kingdom and Los Angeles. Additional cast members are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

About the Original Film

Magnus von Horn’s original Sweat (2020) gained critical attention for its stark portrayal of influencer culture and was later made available on Mubi following its missed Cannes debut. Blakeson’s adaptation, with de Armas in the lead, is expected to expand the narrative’s psychological depth for a broader international audience.

With Sweat, Ana de Armas continues to build a diverse filmography—moving seamlessly between action, prestige drama, and psychologically complex roles—cementing her position as one of Hollywood’s most compelling contemporary stars.
