Lock Upp contestant Akanksha Chamola recently gave viewers a glimpse inside her parents’ Mumbai home, offering a closer look at the interiors and everyday spaces she shares with her family.

The home has a distinctly warm and lived-in character, with cream and off-white furnishings, wooden textures and traditional Indian accents creating a comfortable atmosphere. Rather than following an ultra-luxurious design theme, the interiors focus on functionality, familiarity and personal details.

The home tour came into focus when Akanksha hosted Farah Khan and her cook Dilip at her parents’ residence, with glimpses of the interiors featured in Farah’s YouTube content.

A Compact Kitchen With Granite Countertops

The kitchen is one of the more functional areas of the home. Designed as a parallel galley-style space, it features dark granite countertops running along both sides.

The compact kitchen opens towards a window and utility area, bringing natural light into the workspace. The cabinets have glossy off-white finishes and stainless-steel handles, while light square tiles cover the walls. A patterned decorative strip running across the middle adds some visual detail.

The cooking area includes a built-in stovetop and chimney-style range hood. A countertop microwave and stainless-steel refrigerator complete the main appliance setup.

Overhead lighting and a ceiling fan add to the practicality of the space, keeping the relatively narrow kitchen illuminated and ventilated.

Living Room Combines Neutral Colours With Wooden Details

The living room follows a similarly understated design approach. A cream leather sofa forms the centre of the seating area, accompanied by patterned cushions and a textured grey chevron throw.

A matching plush recliner sits nearby, creating a relaxed corner for the family.

The furniture is complemented by distinctive wooden pieces. Coffee and side tables made from natural wood slices and tree-stump-style forms bring a rustic element into the otherwise neutral room.

The entertainment wall features light-wood vertical plank wallpaper, with a large flat-screen television mounted at the centre.

Traditional decorative elements also feature throughout the space. An ornate white-and-gold wall clock adds a classic touch, while a black wrought-iron display rack holds decorative objects and household items.

The living room flows into a modest dining area designed in keeping with the rest of the home.

A sleek white rectangular dining table is surrounded by chairs covered in quilted off-white protective covers. An amber glass vase arranged on a decorative tray serves as the centrepiece.

A framed oil painting featuring warm orange and red tones introduces colour to the otherwise restrained palette.

Another standout feature is a carved white jaali cabinet positioned in one corner of the dining space. The cabinet doubles as the home temple, bringing a traditional Indian architectural detail into the interiors.

Beside it, a wood-planked accent wall adds texture, while frosted-glass sliding doors provide access to the kitchen.

One of the defining characteristics of Akanksha’s parents’ home is the balance between contemporary household conveniences and traditional decor.

The neutral furniture and modern kitchen appliances keep the spaces practical, while elements such as the jaali temple cabinet, ornate clock, wooden furniture and decorative artwork give the home a more personal identity.

The kitchen also offers an opportunity to look at how technology is increasingly influencing contemporary kitchen design.

Sukriti Sharrma, Partner at Plüsch, explained that built-in technology is becoming increasingly important in premium kitchen spaces.

“Built-in appliances, integrated lighting systems, and advanced cabinet mechanisms are becoming standard in premium kitchens. Smart appliances also offer greater control, efficiency, and ease of use through connected technologies,” she said.

She also highlighted developments in integrated induction cooking systems.

“One particularly interesting development is the evolution of integrated induction systems. In some solutions, the induction hob is concealed beneath the countertop, creating a seamless working surface. The heat is transferred directly to the vessel and the food being prepared, while the countertop itself remains cool to the touch by hand,” Sharrma added.

While Akanksha’s home has a more conventional kitchen setup, these innovations illustrate how kitchen design is evolving towards spaces where appliances, storage and technology can be incorporated more seamlessly.
