Among its many visual highlights, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s bridal ensemble as Jodhaa Bai remains one of the most admired costumes in Indian cinema. Behind the regal look was acclaimed designer Neeta Lulla, whose meticulous craftsmanship transformed a major production challenge into a masterpiece of cinematic fashion.

The Challenge: Creating Royalty Without Shine

In a recent retrospective discussion about her work, Neeta Lulla revealed that one unusual filmmaking requirement significantly influenced the costume design process.

The film’s cinematographer, Kiran Deohans, reportedly preferred shooting large portions of the movie in natural light. While this approach enhanced authenticity and visual richness, it created a unique problem for costume designers.

Materials with excessive shine, gloss, or reflective surfaces could interfere with the visual aesthetic. As a result, costumes had to avoid the traditional sheen often associated with royal attire.

For a film set in the Mughal era, where luxury and grandeur are central to character presentation, this limitation required a completely different design strategy.

Researching Mughal and Rajput Heritage

Determined to maintain historical authenticity while meeting technical requirements, Neeta Lulla embarked on months of extensive research.

She studied:

  • Mughal textiles and embroidery traditions
  • Rajput royal attire
  • Historical motifs and patterns
  • Traditional bridal craftsmanship techniques

The objective was to create a costume that felt historically accurate, visually rich, and camera-friendly despite the restriction on reflective materials.

Four Months of Handcrafted Detailing

The bridal outfit was not built using conventional brocade fabrics. Instead, Lulla’s team developed the appearance of brocade through handcrafted techniques.

According to the designer, the process began with:

  • Organic cotton and mull fabrics as the base
  • Intricate hand embroidery using kasab and resham threads
  • Carefully designed motifs inspired by royal Indian textiles

The craftsmanship aimed to replicate the richness of traditional royal fabrics without relying on reflective surfaces.

The Secret Behind the Regal Appearance

To complete the bridal look, artisans added traditional embellishments including:

  • Gota patti work
  • Kundan detailing
  • Metal ornaments and decorative elements

However, every embellishment underwent a special treatment to reduce shine and create a matte finish.

Up close, the costume reportedly appeared subdued and understated. Yet under the camera’s natural lighting conditions, it delivered the luxurious visual effect required for the character of Jodhaa Bai.

The result was a bridal ensemble that appeared majestic on screen while remaining faithful to the film’s cinematographic vision.

A Costume That Became Part of Cinema History

The success of the design extended far beyond the film itself.

Years after Jodhaa Akbar premiered, the bridal lehenga earned international recognition and was featured at the Academy Museum’s “Colour in Motion” exhibition in Los Angeles, highlighting its contribution to cinematic costume design.

The inclusion showcased how Indian costume artistry can blend historical authenticity, technical innovation, and visual storytelling.

Why the Look Still Inspires Brides Today

Even after 18 years, Aishwarya Rai’s bridal appearance in Jodhaa Akbar remains one of Bollywood’s most referenced wedding looks.

Fashion experts often credit its enduring appeal to:

  • Historical elegance
  • Timeless craftsmanship
  • Balanced use of traditional motifs
  • Authentic royal aesthetics
  • Cinematic grandeur without excess

The lehenga continues to inspire bridal designers and wedding fashion enthusiasts across India and beyond.

A Masterclass in Cinematic Costume Design

The story behind Jodhaa’s bridal attire highlights the often-overlooked role costume designers play in filmmaking. Rather than allowing technical limitations to compromise creativity, Neeta Lulla transformed a production challenge into one of the most iconic costumes in Bollywood history.

Nearly two decades later, the ensemble remains a benchmark for historical costume design and a reminder that true luxury often lies in craftsmanship rather than spectacle.
