A former recruiter who has hired talent for some of the world’s biggest companies says one common resume mistake continues to prevent qualified candidates from getting interview opportunities.

Farah Sharghi, whose recruiting experience includes Google, TikTok, Uber and The New York Times, recently highlighted what she considers the most overlooked weakness in modern resumes: candidates often write for themselves instead of for the recruiter reading the document.

According to Sharghi, the problem is so common that many applicants don’t even realize they are making it.

Recruiters Have Limited Time

Hiring professionals typically spend only a few seconds reviewing a resume before deciding whether to continue reading.

Because of this, Sharghi says clarity, context and readability are just as important as experience and qualifications.

“The biggest resume mistake I see is writing for the one person who already knows your story: you,” she explained.

In many cases, candidates assume recruiters understand the significance of their projects, employers or achievements when, in reality, the reviewer may have no prior knowledge of the organization or role.

Why Context Matters

One of the most effective improvements candidates can make is adding brief context before listing achievements.

Rather than jumping directly into bullet points, Sharghi recommends explaining what the company does and what responsibilities the candidate held.

For example, instead of immediately listing project results, applicants can include a short description that helps recruiters understand the business environment, team structure or scope of responsibility.

This additional context allows achievements to carry more meaning and makes it easier for hiring managers to evaluate impact.

Metrics Need a Story

Career experts often encourage candidates to include numbers in their resumes, but Sharghi warns that metrics without explanation can create confusion.

A statement such as:

  • Generated $630,000 in Q2

may appear impressive but leaves important questions unanswered.

Was the figure related to revenue, sales, fundraising, cost savings or another business objective?

Recruiters need enough information to understand why the number matters and how it reflects the candidate’s contribution.

Providing context transforms a statistic from a random figure into evidence of measurable success.

Avoid Internal Language and Acronyms

Another frequent issue involves the use of company-specific terminology.

Internal project names, acronyms and department jargon may make perfect sense to current employees but can confuse recruiters reviewing applications from outside the organization.

Sharghi advises candidates to describe projects in straightforward language that any reader can understand.

Clear communication demonstrates professionalism and ensures accomplishments are not overlooked due to unnecessary complexity.

Replace Generic Claims With Evidence

Many resumes still contain broad descriptions such as:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong leadership abilities
  • Hard-working professional
  • Team player

While these qualities may be valuable, recruiters generally place greater importance on evidence than self-assessments.

Instead of claiming a skill, candidates should show it through achievements, outcomes and measurable contributions.

For example, leading a cross-functional project, managing a large client portfolio or improving team performance provides stronger proof than simply listing a personal trait.

Practical Resume Strategy for 2026

As hiring becomes increasingly competitive, recruiters are looking for resumes that quickly communicate value.

Career experts recommend focusing on three key principles:

  1. Provide context before achievements.
  2. Explain the significance of metrics and results.
  3. Use simple, universally understood language.

A resume should be written for someone encountering a candidate’s career story for the first time. The easier it is for recruiters to understand accomplishments, the greater the likelihood of securing an interview.

For job seekers navigating today’s competitive hiring market, small adjustments in clarity and context could make a significant difference in standing out from the crowd.
