SALISBURY, Md. — A Wicomico County middle school student is continuing to make her mark on the national stage as she advances deeper into one of the country’s most competitive academic events.

Megan Barrientos, an eighth-grader at Wicomico Middle School, has moved into the quarterfinal round of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee after successfully clearing the preliminary stages of the competition.

Barrientos is no stranger to the national spotlight. In last year’s competition, she reached the semifinals and finished tied for 41st place, demonstrating consistent performance among top student spellers from across the United States.

School officials say her progress reflects steady commitment and disciplined preparation.

Wicomico Middle School Principal Jo Branham noted that Barrientos dedicates significant time to studying not only spelling patterns but also word meanings and vocabulary usage.

“Some people assume contestants simply know these words instantly, but Megan spends considerable time preparing,” Branham said. “Her approach shows strong discipline and a commitment to improvement.”

Educators emphasize that the competition offers broader academic value beyond spelling accuracy. Students are also tested on vocabulary comprehension, reinforcing critical thinking and language development.

Branham added that Barrientos’ experience demonstrates lessons that extend beyond the competition itself.

“She understands the importance of preparation in everything she does, including her academic work and extracurricular activities,” she said.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee allows students to participate through sponsorships provided by educational institutions, businesses, and community organizations. Barrientos earned her place in the 2026 national competition after winning the Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

UMES has supported regional students at the national competition for more than a decade.

Earl Hollins, director of public relations at UMES, praised Barrientos’ achievement and dedication.

“The university is proud of her success and the effort it takes to compete at this level,” Hollins said. “Her performance reflects the importance of academic excellence and persistence.”

To reach the quarterfinals, contestants must advance through multiple rounds, including oral spelling, vocabulary assessments, and a written examination. Only a select group moves forward to the later stages of the competition.

Barrientos now joins the top tier of competitors as she prepares for the next round of the 2026 national bee.

This marks her final year of eligibility, as the competition is open only to middle school participants.

Her continued success has drawn recognition from educators and the local community alike, highlighting both her academic dedication and the strong support system behind her journey.
