The upcoming action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge, directed by Aditya Dhar, is bringing renewed attention to a classic early-2000s pop track. The song Ari Ari, originally released by the Danish-Indian band Bombay Rockers, has found a new audience after being featured in the film’s soundtrack.
The track, which first gained popularity two decades ago, has started trending again among listeners following its inclusion in the movie.
A 2000s pop favourite returns
Bombay Rockers rose to prominence in the early 2000s for blending Punjabi music with Western pop elements. Their style combined hip-hop beats, club music and Punjabi folk influences, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences both in India and among the global South Asian diaspora.
Songs like Rock Tha Party, Nava Nava and Ishq became popular club tracks during that era. Among them, Ari Ari stood out as one of the band’s most memorable hits.

Roots in Punjabi folk tradition
The song Ari Ari draws inspiration from the Punjabi folk refrain Baari Baarsi, which forms part of the Boliyan tradition.
Boliyan are short poetic couplets commonly performed during celebrations such as weddings, harvest festivals and other joyous gatherings in Punjabi culture. These rhythmic verses are often sung in call-and-response style, making them ideal for energetic dance performances.
Original release and creators
Ari Ari was first released in 2003 as part of Bombay Rockers’ debut album Introducing. The band included Danish-Indian singer Navtej Rehal along with producers Thomas Sardorf and Janus Barnewitz.
Their fusion of Punjabi lyrics with international production styles helped shape a distinctive Indo-global pop sound during the early 2000s.
