Markiplier Breaks Down as Iron Lung Scores Box Office Success, Calls It a Win for Indie Films

YouTube creator Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach shared an emotional moment with fans after his independently produced film Iron Lung delivered a strong box office performance during its opening weekend.

Following the theatrical release of his debut feature film, Markiplier addressed viewers in a livestream where he became visibly emotional while discussing the overwhelming response. “It’s been an emotional day — in a good way,” he said, thanking fans for their continued support and encouragement.

The 25-minute livestream began with Markiplier reacting to positive feedback from fellow content creator Hbomberguy, before shifting into a broader reflection on what the film’s success could represent for independent filmmaking. Iron Lung premiered alongside Sam Raimi and Disney’s R-rated thriller Send Help, with both films competing closely for the top box office position over the weekend.

While Send Help is expected to continue its theatrical run, Iron Lung earned approximately $21.5 million worldwide, comfortably surpassing its reported $3 million production budget. Markiplier noted that the film’s performance would allow him to reward the crew with bonuses.

During the livestream, he recalled speaking with a film student who described the project as inspiring proof that independent films can succeed without major studio backing. According to Markiplier, the student encouraged him to keep the project independent, calling it a rare and motivating example for aspiring filmmakers.

Shortly after returning home, Markiplier said he received updates that Send Help was closing the box office gap, trailing by roughly $300,000. He encouraged fans to watch Iron Lung in theatres before it exited cinemas, framing the moment as symbolic rather than competitive.

“I think it might be a big win for independent filmmaking,” he said, clarifying that his comments were not directed at fellow filmmakers but reflected his hope that creator-led projects could continue to thrive.

Iron Lung was written, directed, self-financed, distributed, and headlined by Markiplier. The film is a live-action adaptation of the 2022 independent horror video game of the same name and follows a man trapped inside a metal submarine beneath a mysterious ocean.
