Marvel Studios’ latest animated series, Marvel Zombies, is set to deliver a dark, intense take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pushing the boundaries of superhero storytelling. The four-episode mini-series, streaming on JioHotstar from September 24, expands on the wildly popular What If… Zombies?! episode from the first season of What If…?, exploring a world overrun by zombie superheroes.
Kamala Khan as the Heart of the Story
The series follows the journey of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, voiced by Iman Vellani, who serves as the emotional center of the narrative. Andrews compared Kamala’s role to Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings.
“Kamala hadn’t had her adventures yet. She’s green and new, which makes her perfect for this story. She enters the chaos unprepared, just like Frodo,” Bryan explained during a video call from Studio City, California.
“The big question we wanted to explore was: Does who you are survive the horror you have to go through?”
Kamala’s youthful optimism contrasts sharply with the bleakness of a zombie apocalypse, creating a powerful dynamic as she navigates the terrifying world around her.

Brad Winderbaum emphasized the team’s commitment to making this series feel authentic to the zombie genre.
“Bryan and I are fans of zombie movies, so we wanted Marvel Zombies to have deadly stakes and the visceral moments of violence fans expect,” Winderbaum said.
“To show just how bleak and dangerous this universe is, it had to be a TV-MA series.”
This rating allows the series to showcase graphic action sequences and emotionally intense moments that push Marvel into uncharted storytelling territory.
The Challenge of Bringing the Undead to Life
Transforming beloved heroes into terrifying zombies required extensive visual development work.
“We’d tell the vis dev team, ‘Hey, this character’s a zombie,’ and they’d give us options,” Andrews recalled.
“Sometimes we’d say, ‘That’s not gruesome enough,’ and other times we’d have to dial it back. It was like a playground, figuring out the right balance of horror and Marvel spectacle.”
Despite packing plenty of action and drama into four episodes, Andrews admitted there were still more stories left untold.
