A travel influencer named Swati has sparked an online conversation after sharing her experience of travelling to Iceland with her in-laws from the UK.

In a viral social media video, Swati compared the experience with her first marriage and said she found her current family relationship much healthier. She described her former marriage and in-laws negatively, while praising her current in-laws for their supportive and easygoing behaviour during the trip.

Her comments have since prompted a range of reactions online, particularly around expectations placed on daughters-in-law and the dynamics of relationships within extended families.

Swati Shares Her Iceland Trip Experience

Swati said she recently travelled to Iceland with her husband, Chris, and his parents, who are both 72 years old.

According to Swati, the five- to six-day trip involved long journeys, early mornings and outdoor activities. She said she was impressed by how enthusiastically her in-laws participated without repeatedly complaining about the demanding schedule.

She recalled:

“My in-laws are from the UK, and this is my second marriage. Recently, we took them on a trip to Iceland for 5-6 days. And the best part, apart from no taunts, fights, or drama, was that they were able to do everything without complaining.”

Swati said her in-laws even joined them for a hike despite their age and maintained a positive attitude throughout the trip.

A Thank-You Message After the Holiday

The experience appeared to leave a particularly strong impression on Swati because of what happened after the family returned home.

She said her in-laws sent her and Chris a message thanking them for organising the Iceland holiday.

In the message, they acknowledged the time, effort and expense involved in arranging the trip and said they had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The message included:

“We wanted to reiterate our thanks to you both for such a wonderful time in Iceland; we are very aware of how much time, thought, and money went into planning the trip and all the visits and are truly so grateful to you both.”

Swati said receiving the message made her feel that the effort involved in planning the holiday had been worthwhile.

Swati Compares It With Her First Marriage

The travel influencer said her positive experience with her current in-laws contrasted sharply with her experience during her first marriage.

According to Swati, her previous marriage was to an Indian man, and she described her former husband’s family as “horrible,” saying she felt that nothing she did was good enough.

She said:

“My previous marriage and family were horrible. Nothing was good enough for them.”

Swati used the comparison to explain what she believes a healthier relationship with in-laws can look like.

She also said she was happy with her current family dynamic.

The Conversation Around In-Law Relationships

Swati’s video touched on a broader conversation about family expectations, particularly the pressures that can sometimes exist within marriages and relationships with extended family.

Her comments resonated with some viewers who said they had experienced difficult relationships with their own in-laws. Others shared stories about marriages in which cultural expectations created tension between couples and extended families.

However, the experiences described in the comments are individual accounts and should not be treated as representative of every Indian, British, American or international family.

Family relationships can vary significantly depending on personalities, expectations, communication styles, cultural backgrounds and individual circumstances.

Social Media Users Share Their Experiences

The video prompted numerous responses from viewers.

One commenter referenced expectations surrounding clothing and wrote that some women are celebrated simply because their mothers-in-law “allow” them to wear sleeveless clothes.

Another user described having been married to an Indian man and said the relationship involved difficult dynamics with his extended family.

A third commenter joked about the contrast between active travel and family members who might prefer to rest during a holiday.

Another woman said she had experienced a similar situation, describing her second marriage to an American man as significantly different from her first marriage to an Indian man.

These reactions show why Swati’s video resonated with viewers who have experienced complicated relationships with spouses or extended families.

A Personal Story, Not a Verdict on Culture

While the video has generated discussion about Indian and Western family dynamics, Swati’s comments ultimately describe her own experiences.

Comparisons between families from different cultural backgrounds can easily become overly broad. A healthy relationship between in-laws depends on mutual respect, communication, personal boundaries and consideration rather than nationality alone.

Swati’s story has nevertheless opened a conversation about what many people want from relationships with their extended families: appreciation for effort, fewer unnecessary conflicts and the freedom to maintain healthy boundaries.

For Swati, the Iceland trip appears to have reinforced her belief that family relationships can be supportive and enjoyable when everyone involved respects one another.
