Shruti Haasan Rehomes Adopted Cat Aslan After Severe Allergic Reaction: ‘I Feel I Failed’

Shruti Haasan has shared an emotional account of why she had to part ways with her adopted Persian kitten, Aslan, after developing severe allergic reactions that continued despite repeated efforts to manage the problem.

In a personal Substack post published on August 9, the actor and singer explained that she had adopted Aslan around three months earlier. She described the kitten as affectionate, playful and one of the sweetest cats she had encountered.

Shruti, who has been a cat lover for much of her adult life and already has another cat named Clara, said she had been excited to welcome Aslan into her home. However, her health began to change only two days after the kitten arrived.

Shruti Haasan Developed a Severe Skin Reaction

According to Shruti’s account, she initially developed a rash across her face, including severe boils. At first, she wondered whether something she had eaten might have caused the reaction.

After consulting her dermatologist, she began considering whether Aslan’s fur and saliva could be triggering the allergy.

Shruti said the possibility was particularly difficult for her to accept because she had already formed an emotional connection with the kitten.

“I’ve been a cat person my whole adult life,” she wrote, explaining why bringing an animal into her home had been such a meaningful experience.

She Tried Several Ways to Stay With Aslan

Shruti said rehoming Aslan was not an immediate decision. Instead, she tried a number of measures in an effort to control the allergic reaction while keeping the kitten at home.

She had Aslan’s hair trimmed, used air purifiers, regularly wiped him down and changed his food. She also tried allergy medication, but said the treatment did not adequately control the reaction and she eventually needed stronger medication.

“I genuinely thought over time we could figure this out together, me and Aslan,” Shruti wrote.

Her allergy also changed the way she interacted with the kitten. She said she had to be careful about getting his fur on her clothes and wash her hands after touching him.

Despite those precautions, the symptoms continued.

“I would travel, come back home and break out into those allergy boils every single time,” she revealed.

Health Problems Began Affecting Her Work

The continuing allergic reactions eventually began affecting more than Shruti’s physical health.

She said the problem started interfering with her work as well as her state of mind. At the same time, she found it difficult to give Aslan the affection and physical closeness she felt he deserved.

For Shruti, the situation became a painful conflict between her attachment to the kitten and her inability to safely live with him.

The situation became particularly difficult after she returned from Chennai to Mumbai and experienced another severe reaction.

That was when she realised she could no longer continue trying to manage the situation in the same way.

Aslan Was Put Up for Adoption Again

Shruti eventually contacted Aslan’s former foster mother and made the decision to have him rehomed.

She said Aslan no longer lives with her and that his former foster mother, along with Shruti and her friends, are working to find him another loving home.

The decision has been emotionally difficult for the actor, who said she struggled with the guilt of having to separate from an animal that could not understand why he was leaving.

“It’s been so heartbreaking I cannot even begin to describe the guilt and the pain I’m feeling,” Shruti wrote.

She also described saying goodbye to Aslan as one of the hardest decisions she has had to make.

‘Let This Not Be A Story About Failed Adoption’

Shruti specifically asked readers not to view Aslan’s rehoming simply as a failed adoption.

“Let this not be a story about failed adoption, I feel I failed with my allergies,” she wrote.

At the same time, she stressed the value of giving animals safe and loving homes and encouraged people to recognise the responsibility involved in caring for them.

For Shruti, the decision was not about losing interest in Aslan. Instead, it followed repeated attempts to manage a health problem that she said had become increasingly difficult to control.

The actor also addressed people who might question why the loss of a pet could have such a profound emotional effect.

“There might be some of you who think why all this melodrama for a kitten,” she wrote.

Shruti explained that people who have formed close relationships with animals can understand the depth of that bond. For her, Aslan was not simply a pet who had briefly lived in her home but an animal with whom she had developed an emotional connection.

She also pointed to the difficulty of saying goodbye when the animal cannot understand the reason for the separation.

“Saying goodbye to people is not even slightly close to what it means to say goodbye to an animal who cannot converse with you,” she wrote.

Shruti Asks Fans to Send Love to Aslan

Although the decision has left Shruti dealing with guilt and sadness, she said she hopes Aslan will eventually find a warm and loving home.

She ended her lengthy explanation by asking people to send their love to the kitten.

Her account also offered a broader reminder that adopting an animal involves both emotional commitment and practical considerations, including the health and living circumstances of everyone in the household.

For Shruti, rehoming Aslan was a painful necessity after repeated attempts to make the arrangement work. Her message makes clear that the decision was not taken lightly and that she continues to care deeply about what happens to the kitten.
