Versova police registered an accidental death report, while colleagues paid tribute to the filmmaker known for Kaante and Kaabil.
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has died following a reported fall at his Versova residence in Mumbai, according to police accounts published by The Indian Express and Times of India.
Police said he sustained a head injury during the incident on the night of October 30–31. An accidental death report was registered, and officers said further investigation was underway.
Gupta’s death prompted tributes from colleagues across the Hindi film industry.
What police have reported
Times of India quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police Purushottam Karad as saying the incident became known to family members the following morning and Gupta was pronounced dead at Cooper Hospital.
Police were examining the circumstances of the reported fall. The family had not expressed suspicion or lodged a complaint, according to the officer’s account.
The registration of an accidental death report records the matter for inquiry. It should not be treated as a completed investigation or a substitute for final medical findings.
Colleagues remember the filmmaker
Sanjay Dutt paid tribute to Gupta, remembering their friendship and years of working together. Director Milap Zaveri also expressed grief, while several industry colleagues attended the last rites, according to published coverage.
Times of India reported that Rakesh Roshan, Rohit Roy, Ronit Roy, Farah Khan and Fardeen Khan were among those present.
Their tributes reflected both professional associations and personal relationships built over Gupta’s career.
A career associated with crime thrillers
Gupta made his feature directorial debut with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994.
His directing credits include Kaante, Musafir, Zinda, Shootout at Wadala, Jazbaa, Kaabil and Mumbai Saga. His work frequently returned to crime, conflict and action-driven stories.
An important credit distinction concerns Shootout at Lokhandwala: Gupta produced and co-wrote the film, rather than directing it. His association with the title should therefore not be listed among his directorial credits.
Investigation remains separate from tributes
The available reports describe a suspected fall and an ongoing police inquiry. They do not establish a publicly available final medical conclusion or complete reconstruction of events.
Further updates should rely on confirmed police information or authorised statements from the family. Speculation about circumstances beyond those accounts would be inappropriate.
