Radhika Apte has spoken about the deeply personal consequences of having intimate footage from a film project circulated without her consent.

During a recent conversation about the challenges actors face while filming intimate scenes, Apte explained that the impact of such an incident can extend well beyond the internet. For her, the experience affected her sense of security in everyday life and made her increasingly conscious of the people around her.

The actor recalled feeling particularly vulnerable because the footage had reached people who were part of her immediate surroundings.

Radhika Apte says the leak affected her sense of safety

Apte explained that the situation became especially distressing because the footage was not confined to an online audience.

She recalled learning that people she encountered through her everyday life, including individuals connected to her residential building and her professional support network, had seen the leaked material.

At the time, Apte was living alone, which heightened her concerns about personal security.

The actor said the experience was not simply embarrassing or uncomfortable. It changed the way she viewed her surroundings and made her feel unsafe enough to stay inside her home for several days.

The incident illustrates one of the difficult consequences of unauthorized intimate-content leaks: once private material is circulated, the person affected may have to deal not only with the digital spread but also with the possibility of encountering people who have seen it.

She spoke to her support staff about her concerns

Faced with the uncertainty, Apte chose to speak directly with members of her support team.

She recalled having conversations with her driver and spot assistant, making it clear that they could step away from their jobs if they felt uncomfortable following the incident.

Her priority, she explained, was ensuring that she felt secure.

Apte also acknowledged the support she received from the two members of her team during that difficult period.

Her account highlights how privacy violations can affect professional relationships as well as personal life, particularly for performers whose work can involve scenes that require significant trust between actors, directors and production teams.

Intimate scenes can have consequences beyond the set

The discussion also raises a broader issue surrounding intimate scenes in cinema and television.

Actors may consent to performing a scene within a particular production, but that consent does not extend to the unauthorized distribution of footage outside its intended context.

Once material is leaked, the consequences can include unwanted attention, harassment, embarrassment and concerns about physical safety.

For performers, the boundary between professional work and private life can become particularly difficult to maintain when intimate material is circulated without permission.

Apte says fear once influenced a career decision

The actor also spoke about another occasion when personal safety concerns affected a professional decision.

Apte revealed that she once turned down a project she wanted to pursue because of the political environment at the time.

According to her account, it was an unusual instance in which fear influenced a career choice. She ultimately decided that protecting herself and her family was more important than accepting the role.

She also recalled receiving guidance from filmmaker Anurag Kashyap while considering the decision.

The experience appears to have remained significant for Apte because it showed her how circumstances outside filmmaking can sometimes influence the choices an actor makes professionally.

Radhika Apte balances work and motherhood

Apte has also entered a new phase of her personal life in recent years.

She and her husband, British musician Benedict Taylor, welcomed their first child, a daughter, in December 2024.

The actor subsequently continued balancing professional commitments with motherhood. She attended the BAFTAs in February 2025 and has remained involved in screen work.

Her recent credits include an appearance in Lust Stories 3, the Netflix anthology series.

A conversation about privacy and consent

Apte’s recollection brings attention to an issue that extends beyond the entertainment industry.

Consent given for a performance is not the same as permission for private or production material to be redistributed. The circulation of unauthorized intimate footage can have consequences for a person’s emotional wellbeing, professional life and sense of security.

For Apte, the experience was a reminder that the effects of a privacy violation can continue long after a piece of content appears online.
