Nushrratt Bharuccha on Why Male-Led Films Perform Better at Box Office: “It’s Very Difficult for a Female Actor”

Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha has once again spoken candidly about the realities of the Hindi film industry, explaining why male-led films often perform better at the box office compared to female-driven projects. Known for her honest opinions and unconventional career choices, the actor addressed the issue during a recent session organised by India Today.

Sharing her perspective, Nushrratt pointed out that the imbalance is deeply rooted and cannot change overnight.
“They are made less. Males constitute the majority of the population in our country. This has been the situation for many years,” she said, adding that while change is slow, it is inevitable. “Change doesn’t happen instantly, but it will definitely happen.”

Female-Led Films Can Work, Too

The actor emphasised that films led by women do succeed when audiences connect with them. She cited examples such as Mimi, Chhorii, Dream Girl, Akeli, and Pink, all of which performed well commercially and critically.

“For me, Khoon Bhari Maang was very powerful,” Nushrratt said, stressing that heroism should not be defined by gender. “Females can also be heroes. It’s just that such films are rarely made in our country.”

Challenges Faced by Women in Bollywood

Opening up about her own journey, Nushrratt spoke about the additional hurdles faced by female actors—especially outsiders.
“It’s very difficult for a female actor. I’m an outsider. I came in through auditions,” she said, adding that reaching a film like Chhorii was a crucial milestone in her career.

She also reflected on how being associated with commercial comedies initially worked against her credibility as an actor.
“There’s a mindset that if you do commercial films, you can’t be authentic,” she explained. “After Pyaar Ka Punchnama, people thought I would only suit such roles and wouldn’t take me seriously.”

Breaking Perceptions with OTT

Nushrratt revealed that the OTT horror film Chhorii became a turning point. “When Chhorii came my way, I grabbed it. I knew I had to do it. Through that film, I changed people’s perception,” she said.

What’s Next for Nushrratt Bharuccha

Talking about her upcoming work, the actor shared that she is part of Neeraj Pandey’s next project, a thriller drama set to release next year.
“It’s very close to my heart,” she said. “It addresses an important issue that girls don’t usually talk about.”
