Madhuri Dixit has spent decades in the spotlight, but the actor says understanding how to manage her money came much later in her career.
In a conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza, Madhuri reflected on her early years in the film industry and explained that she had little involvement in managing her finances when she first started earning. Her father handled much of the responsibility at the time, while her increasingly busy professional schedule left her with little opportunity to focus on financial planning.
“When I started working, it was just small sums of money, we did small expenses – we bought a car or something else, but once I started working, I got so busy I did not have time to do anything, let alone look after my money. My dad used to do most of the managing,” she said.
Madhuri Dixit Says Her Approach to Money Changed After Marriage
According to Madhuri, her financial understanding developed significantly after she got married. She credited her husband, Dr Shriram Nene, with helping her learn more about investing and making informed financial decisions.

He’s always teaching me how to invest, where to invest, and how to find out about companies. I knew very little about money management before, but I know a lot now,” she said.
Her comments offer a glimpse into a less-discussed aspect of her journey as one of Hindi cinema’s most successful performers.
Why Financial Awareness Matters Beyond a High Income
Madhuri’s experience also highlights an important distinction between earning money and knowing how to manage it.
Mukesh Pandey, Director of Rupyaa Paisa, told The Indian Express that developing a healthy relationship with money involves prioritising saving and investing before discretionary spending.
A “save-and-invest-first” approach, he explained, can help people build assets and reduce financial pressure over time rather than relying on visible markers of wealth.

Expensive fashion, gadgets and experiences can offer immediate satisfaction, but they do not necessarily contribute to long-term financial security.
Five Ways to Build a Healthier Money Mindset
The financial principles discussed in the context of Madhuri’s experience can apply to anyone, regardless of income level.
Pay Yourself First
Treat savings as a regular financial commitment rather than whatever remains at the end of the month. Automating transfers to a savings or investment account can make the habit more consistent.

Saving becomes easier to structure when there is a clear purpose behind it. Goals could include purchasing a home, building an emergency fund, funding education or preparing for retirement.
Track Your Spending
Knowing where money goes is essential to understanding financial habits. Tracking expenses can reveal recurring costs, unnecessary purchases and areas where spending can be adjusted.
Delay Non-Essential Purchases
Giving yourself time before making an impulse purchase can help distinguish between something you genuinely need and something that simply looks appealing in the moment.
Learn Before You Invest
Investing should involve understanding where money is being placed and what risks are involved. Madhuri’s comments about learning how to assess investments underline the value of becoming financially informed rather than relying entirely on someone else to make decisions.
Financial Communication Matters in Relationships
Pandey also highlighted the importance of financial communication between couples.
Income, debt, spending patterns, savings and upcoming expenses can all affect a household’s financial stability. Avoiding conversations about money may create unnecessary pressure, while regular and transparent discussions can help couples make decisions together.
In Madhuri’s case, she says her husband played an important role in helping her understand investing and financial management. Her experience illustrates how financial knowledge can develop gradually, particularly when people take an active interest in learning about their finances.
Madhuri Dixit’s Perspective Offers a Broader Lesson
Madhuri’s comments are notable not because celebrities necessarily have different financial challenges from everyone else, but because they highlight a common reality: earning an income does not automatically translate into financial literacy.
The actor says she knew relatively little about money management when she was younger and became more knowledgeable over time. Her story therefore points to the importance of learning about saving, investing and financial planning regardless of when someone begins earning.
For Madhuri, that education came through experience and guidance from her husband. Today, she says she understands considerably more about managing and investing her money than she did when she first entered the workforce.
