Ananya Panday Says Deepika Padukone Taught Her to Speak Up on Set

Actor Ananya Panday has spoken about a key lesson she learned while working with Deepika Padukone during the filming of Gehraiyaan (2022).

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Ananya reflected on the early challenges she faced in her career and how working with experienced actors helped shape her confidence in the industry.

Learning to Speak for Herself

Ananya shared that when she first started working in films, she often hesitated to express her opinions on set.

“I didn’t know that I could say no or ask questions,” she said while recalling her early days in the industry.

She explained that observing Deepika Padukone during the making of Gehraiyaan changed that perspective.

According to Ananya, Deepika handled situations on set with calm confidence and clarity. If something required adjustment—such as a dialogue, a camera position, or maintaining silence during a shot—she would politely raise the issue.

Seeing that approach made Ananya realize that actors should feel comfortable speaking up about their work environment and creative process.

“After seeing that, I realised it’s okay to ask questions,” she said, adding that she now actively participates in conversations about her scenes and roles.

Supporting Conversations Around Work-Life Balance

During the interview, Ananya also spoke in support of discussions around working conditions in the film industry.

She noted that before becoming a mother, Deepika maintained a demanding schedule and was known for her professionalism and commitment on set.

However, she said it is natural for priorities to evolve.

Ananya explained that conversations about working hours or schedules can help actors balance their professional responsibilities with personal life.

The topic of working conditions gained attention when Deepika Padukone reportedly stepped away from the film Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, after discussions about certain work arrangements did not move forward.

Reports also suggested that scheduling considerations later affected discussions around the upcoming project Kalki 2898 AD and its future plans.
