According to McMechan, she had no idea she was queer when she first became involved with the project.

“When I started the project, I had no idea that I was queer. Then we went into the pandemic, and everyone was soul-searching and realizing things about themselves.”

She later came out as bisexual to her friends before sharing the news with her parents in 2023.
