The seizure was made during a surveillance operation conducted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and the Customs Department, officials said.

The case is being investigated under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Passenger Stopped After Arriving From Bangkok

According to customs officials, the passenger arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok on the night of June 10–11, 2026, aboard a flight operating between the two cities.

Officials reportedly became suspicious during routine monitoring and decided to conduct a detailed examination of the passenger and her baggage.

During the inspection, authorities allegedly discovered multiple vacuum-sealed packets concealed inside a trolley bag.

Over 11 Kg of Suspected Narcotics Recovered

Customs officials stated that a total of 12 vacuum-sealed packets containing a green plant-based substance were recovered from the luggage.

A preliminary field test conducted using a narcotics detection kit reportedly indicated the presence of hydroponic marijuana, a high-potency form of cannabis cultivated using specialized growing techniques.

Authorities said the seized substance weighed more than 11 kilograms.

Based on estimates provided by investigators, the value of the recovered material has been assessed at approximately ₹11.82 crore in the illicit market.

Arrest Made Under NDPS Act

Following the recovery, customs officials arrested the passenger under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, India’s primary law governing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The accused was subsequently produced before a local court in Mumbai, which remanded her to judicial custody pending further investigation.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.

Investigation Focuses on Distribution Network

Investigators are now working to determine the alleged source, intended recipients and possible distribution network linked to the seized consignment.

Authorities are examining:

  • The origin of the recovered substance
  • Potential local contacts
  • Intended delivery locations
  • Possible links to organized trafficking networks
  • Travel and communication records

Officials have not yet disclosed whether additional suspects have been identified.

Rising Focus on Airport Drug Interceptions

Indian enforcement agencies have increased surveillance at major international airports in recent years amid concerns about cross-border narcotics trafficking.

Airports in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad regularly conduct intelligence-led operations aimed at intercepting illegal substances being transported through passenger baggage and cargo channels.

Law enforcement agencies have noted that international drug trafficking networks frequently attempt to exploit global travel routes for smuggling operations.

Understanding Hydroponic Marijuana

Hydroponic marijuana refers to cannabis cultivated using hydroponic growing systems rather than traditional soil-based methods.

Such cultivation techniques can allow growers to closely control nutrients, water and environmental conditions.

Law enforcement agencies often classify hydroponically grown cannabis separately in investigations because of its higher market value and demand in illegal narcotics markets.

The legality of cannabis-related substances in India is governed by the NDPS Act and related regulations.

Legal Proceedings Ahead

The case will now proceed through the legal process as investigators continue gathering evidence.

Authorities are expected to submit further findings regarding:

  • The nature of the seized substance
  • Forensic examination results
  • Possible trafficking links
  • The intended destination of the alleged consignment

Additional details may emerge as the investigation progresses.

Conclusion

The seizure of more than 11 kilograms of suspected hydroponic marijuana at Mumbai airport highlights the ongoing efforts of customs and enforcement agencies to combat international narcotics trafficking.

With the investigation still underway, authorities are focusing on identifying any wider network potentially connected to the case while legal proceedings continue in accordance with the law.
