Raising children in a wealthy or high-profile family comes with a unique parenting challenge: how do you give children opportunities without making them feel entitled to every luxury?

Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has previously shared one simple rule she follows with her three children. While she may travel in business class, her children travel economy. Her reasoning is that her children have not yet done anything to warrant the additional luxury.

The rule may be about something as ordinary as an airplane seat, but the principle behind it is much broader. Farah’s approach reflects an effort to help her children understand the difference between being privileged and being spoiled.

A similar idea has been discussed by Michelle Obama while talking about raising her daughters, Malia and Sasha, with former US President Barack Obama. Even while their family lived in the White House and their daughters had access to extraordinary opportunities, the Obamas have spoken about the importance of keeping them grounded and connected to the values they grew up with.

The approaches are not about deliberately depriving children. Instead, they highlight an important parenting distinction: having access to something does not necessarily mean being entitled to it.

Farah Khan’s Economy-Class Rule Is About More Than Flying

Farah Khan’s parenting philosophy has attracted attention because of how deliberately simple it is.

If a parent can afford a premium experience, it can be tempting for children to receive the same privileges automatically. But Farah’s decision to travel differently from her children establishes a boundary around luxury.

The underlying message is that comfort should be appreciated rather than taken for granted.

For children growing up in a celebrity household, this can be particularly relevant. Fame and financial success can make certain experiences seem ordinary even though they are far from ordinary for most families.

A small rule can therefore become a practical lesson in perspective.

Michelle Obama Also Emphasised Keeping Her Daughters Grounded

Michelle Obama has spoken publicly about wanting Malia and Sasha to understand that their circumstances did not make them fundamentally different from other children.

Their childhood was inevitably unusual. They lived in the White House, experienced unprecedented public attention and had access to opportunities that most children would never encounter.

Yet the values their parents wanted to pass on were rooted in perspective, responsibility and an appreciation of what they had.

The broader lesson is not that children of successful parents should be denied expensive experiences. Rather, parents can help children understand why those experiences are possible and why they should not automatically expect more.

5 Humble Parenting Lessons Inspired by Farah Khan and Michelle Obama

1. Teach Children That Privilege Is Not Entitlement

A comfortable childhood does not have to produce a sense of entitlement.

Children can enjoy good schools, holidays, gifts, technology or other comforts while simultaneously understanding that these things are privileges.

The distinction becomes important when children learn that receiving something does not mean they are automatically owed it again.

2. Introduce Gratitude Early

Gratitude is easier to develop when children are encouraged to notice what they already have.

Parents can help by making children appreciate experiences rather than constantly moving on to the next purchase, trip or gift.

A child does not need to feel guilty about having more. The goal is to help them recognise the value of what they receive.

3. Set Boundaries Around Luxury

Rules do not always have to involve punishment or restriction.

A parent may decide that a child needs to wait before receiving an expensive item, earn greater independence before accessing certain privileges or simply experience a less luxurious option even when a more expensive one is available.

Farah Khan’s travel example illustrates how a relatively small boundary can communicate a larger principle about expectations.

4. Explain the Reason Behind the Rules

Children are more likely to understand boundaries when parents explain the values behind them.

Simply saying “no” can make a restriction feel arbitrary. Explaining that a family wants to teach responsibility, appreciation or independence can turn the same rule into a learning experience.

The objective is not blind obedience. It is helping children understand why a particular boundary exists.

5. Give Perspective Without Creating Guilt

Teaching children about privilege should not mean making them feel ashamed of their family’s circumstances.

Instead, parents can encourage children to recognise that their opportunities may not be available to everyone.

That perspective can be connected to empathy, responsibility and generosity. Children can learn that having more opportunities creates reasons to appreciate them and, where possible, use them thoughtfully.

The Goal Is Grounded Children, Not Deprived Children

Farah Khan and Michelle Obama’s experiences as parents are obviously different, and neither approach represents a universal parenting formula.

But the broader principle is relatable beyond celebrity families.

Children do not necessarily need fewer opportunities simply because their parents can afford them. What can matter is whether they understand the difference between receiving something and being entitled to it.

For parents, everyday decisions can become opportunities to teach that distinction. A flight seat, a birthday gift, a holiday or even access to expensive technology can become a lesson in gratitude and responsibility.

Giving children opportunities can open doors. Teaching them to appreciate those opportunities can help them understand what those doors mean.

The goal is not to give children less love or fewer chances. It is to help them grow up understanding the value of what they have.
