Avika Gor has spoken candidly in an old interview about experiencing rejection because of her appearance. The Balika Vadhu actor recalled a project that had reportedly been finalised before she was told that the makers wanted someone they considered more “gorgeous”. She also remembered an unexpected moment of encouragement from a housekeeping staff member that helped her put the experience into perspective.

Being rejected for a professional opportunity can be difficult for anyone. For actors, however, criticism of appearance can make the experience particularly personal.

Avika Gor, who became a household name as a child actor through Balika Vadhu, has previously opened up about one such experience in an old interview that has resurfaced online.

The actor recalled being told directly that she did not fit the makers’ idea of how beautiful their heroine should be.

Rather than hiding the emotional impact of the incident, Avika spoke about how she processed the disappointment—and how an unexpected compliment from a woman working at the same office changed the way she looked at the situation.

Avika Gor Recalls A Difficult Rejection

According to Avika’s recollection, she had attended a meeting for a project where things appeared to be moving smoothly.

She said the project had been discussed, everything had seemingly been finalised and she had even signed it. But during the process, she was told that the makers wanted a heroine who was considered more “gorgeous”.

The comment was made directly to her, according to the actor.

Avika recalled being asked in the interview whether those words had actually been said to her face. She confirmed that they had.

Interestingly, the actor said she did not necessarily view the people involved as intentionally cruel. From her perspective, they may simply have been expressing what they were looking for in a performer.

She acknowledged that filmmakers have the right to make casting choices, even though hearing such feedback can still be painful.

The experience nevertheless affected Avika emotionally.

She recalled feeling increasingly exhausted during the meeting as the conversation continued.

For an actor who had already achieved considerable recognition at a young age, being told that she did not fit a particular idea of beauty could understandably feel discouraging.

But what happened next offered her a very different perspective.

‘I Started Feeling Very Tired’

A Housekeeping Staff Member Gave Her Unexpected Encouragement

While she was at the office, Avika remembered a woman from the housekeeping staff approaching her.

According to the actor, the woman came up to her and said that she wanted her own daughter to grow up to be like Avika.

The simple compliment had a profound effect on the actor.

At a time when she had been made to question her appearance, hearing that someone admired her for the person she represented was more meaningful to her than the rejection she had just experienced.

Avika became emotional while recalling the incident.

The moment reminded her that beauty and worth cannot be measured solely by whether one casting team considers someone suitable for a particular role.

Avika also described how she has learned to deal with difficult moments in her professional life.

She said that when something hurts her, she allows herself a short period to process the emotion. Her approach, as she described it, is to cry for around 10 minutes, think about what happened and then move forward.

The idea is not necessarily to suppress disappointment, but to avoid allowing one setback to take over her entire day.

After acknowledging the emotion, she focuses on returning to the work she needs to do.

It is a perspective that many people can relate to, particularly in careers where rejection is a regular part of professional life.

From Balika Vadhu To Films

Avika Gor became widely known across India after playing Anandi in the popular television series Balika Vadhu.

Her performance as the young protagonist made her one of the most recognisable child actors on Indian television.

After taking time away from acting while focusing on her education, Avika returned to screen work and subsequently appeared in projects across the South Indian film industry as well as Hindi cinema.

Her career later took her to Bollywood with 1920: Horrors of the Heart, a horror film associated with Mahesh Bhatt’s production banner. The film featured Avika alongside actors including Rahul Dev.

Why Avika’s Story Still Resonates

The entertainment industry continues to place significant emphasis on appearance, particularly when casting actors for specific roles.

But an actor being rejected for a role does not establish that they are objectively less attractive or less talented. Casting decisions are subjective and can depend on a character brief, creative direction, chemistry, age requirements, physicality and many other factors.

Avika’s recollection illustrates another side of rejection: the emotional effect it can have when professional feedback becomes a judgment about someone’s appearance.

Her response also offers a reminder that one person’s opinion does not define another person’s worth.

Sometimes, as Avika’s story suggests, an encouraging word from an unexpected person can carry far more weight than a rejection.
