Parineeti Chopra has spoken about the changing perception of motherhood in the Hindi film industry, saying that female actors should not have to step away from their careers after becoming mothers.

Speaking at the trailer launch of her upcoming Netflix series Shaque: Trust No One, Parineeti pointed to actors including Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as examples of women who have continued working after embracing motherhood.

According to Parineeti, the industry and its audience are gradually moving beyond the older perception that motherhood could limit an actress’s career.

The actor said that these women are not only continuing their careers but are also taking on quality work.

“I’m so glad that our generation, including Alia, me, Deepika, my own sister Priyanka, who is working in the West, and all of us are able to be mothers and we are doing the same quality of work. In fact, I think we are doing better work now,” Parineeti said.

Parineeti also reflected on the challenges faced by actresses in earlier generations. She said it was unfortunate that some women had to deal with industry perceptions that motherhood could affect their professional opportunities.

The actor emphasized that becoming a mother should not mean having to give up a career.

“I would hate to stop working just because I became a mom,” she said.

Parineeti added that the relationship between actors and the entertainment industry works both ways. According to her, actresses need opportunities from writers, directors and producers, while audiences also influence what kind of stories and performers the industry continues to support.

“The audience is not cancelling mothers, and hence writers, directors and actors are able to make content,” Parineeti said.
