Anaya Bangar says her cricketing ambitions are firmly back on track.

After Cricket Australia opened a pathway that makes her eligible for selection in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), Anaya is looking towards the next chapter of her sporting journey. The cricketer, who is the child of former India batter and coach Sanjay Bangar, has also shared her long-term dream: representing India and winning a World Cup.

In an interview with India Today, Anaya spoke about the challenges she says she faced during her journey, the period when she nearly lost faith in her dream of playing professional cricket, and her hopes for more inclusive policies in women’s sport.

Her message to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was clear. Anaya said she hopes sporting policies can create fair and dignified opportunities while allowing her to pursue her ambition of playing at the highest level.

‘I Want to Win Something for the Country’

For Anaya, the ultimate goal remains international cricket.

Speaking about her hopes for the future, she said she would like the BCCI to consider policies that are inclusive and fair in relation to women’s cricket.

“I just hope BCCI looks into it and creates policies which are inclusive, fair, and dignified towards women’s sport, and I hope to win the World Cup for India one day,” Anaya said.

She added that representing the country and winning a major title remains her biggest sporting ambition.

“I want to win something for the country, and that’s my dream,” she said.

Her comments come at a time when international sporting organisations continue to develop and debate eligibility frameworks for women’s competitions. Such policies can vary between governing bodies, competitions and jurisdictions.

Any future question of eligibility to represent India would ultimately depend on the policies and regulations in force at the relevant time and decisions made by the appropriate cricketing authorities.

Cricket Australia Opens a New Pathway

Anaya’s professional cricket ambitions received a significant boost after Cricket Australia established a pathway that made her eligible for selection in the Women’s Big Bash League.

The WBBL is one of the world’s leading domestic women’s T20 competitions and has become an important platform for international and domestic players.

For Anaya, eligibility represents an opportunity to return her focus to the sport that has remained central to her ambitions.

She has said there was a period when she almost gave up on the possibility of playing professional cricket.

However, support from people around her and the acceptance she experienced helped her regain confidence in the possibility of pursuing the game professionally.

The Cricket Australia development has now given her a new platform from which to pursue those ambitions.

A Journey She Describes as Difficult and Isolating

Anaya has openly spoken about the personal challenges she faced during her journey.

According to her, the difficulties did not come only from public criticism. She also said she did not always feel fully supported by people around her.

“This journey was very tough,” she said. “I had to deal with a lot of backlash, not just from the public, but within family as well.”

She described the experience as challenging and, at times, isolating.

Her account offers a personal perspective on the pressures that can accompany major life changes while simultaneously trying to pursue a career in professional sport.

Public figures often face scrutiny, but athletes whose personal journeys become part of wider public conversations can experience another layer of pressure.

For Anaya, the journey involved trying to continue pursuing cricket while also managing significant personal and financial challenges.

‘Living in Dressing Rooms’ During Her Time in the UK

Anaya also spoke about a particularly difficult period during her time in the United Kingdom.

She said there was a stage when she lived in cricket dressing rooms while trying to support herself.

“There was a certain period of time where I was living in dressing rooms in the UK just to survive and fend for myself,” she said.

According to Anaya, that period lasted for approximately five months.

She later decided to build a presence on social media as a way of supporting herself financially.

Anaya said social media opportunities, including brand partnerships, helped her generate income during that period.

She said the earnings helped her cover expenses related to her personal transition and gender-affirming medical care.

These statements represent Anaya’s own account of her experiences.

Social Media Became a Source of Financial Support

For many emerging athletes and creators, social media has become more than a platform for building an audience. It can also provide financial opportunities through partnerships, endorsements and collaborations.

Anaya said she turned to social media after experiencing financial difficulties.

According to her account, brand deals helped her support herself and fund aspects of her personal journey.

The decision to become more publicly visible, however, also meant exposing herself to wider public scrutiny.

Her story illustrates the complicated relationship between social media visibility and personal independence.

A larger public profile can create opportunities, but it can also bring intense criticism and attention.

Solitude and Resilience

Despite describing the journey as “brutal” and isolating, Anaya said periods of solitude helped her become stronger.

She said the experience played a role in developing her confidence and resilience.

“It’s been a crazy ride, to be honest,” she said. “It’s been isolating, it’s been brutal, but throughout all this, solitude has helped me a lot through this.”

For Anaya, the focus now appears to be shifting back towards cricket and the possibility of competitive opportunities.

The WBBL pathway provides an important development, but the long-term direction of her career will depend on selection, performance and the eligibility rules of the competitions and cricket authorities involved.

What Does This Mean for Her Cricket Career?

Cricket Australia’s eligibility framework gives Anaya an opportunity to pursue selection in the WBBL, but eligibility does not guarantee a place in a professional squad.

Like other players, she would need to meet the competition’s requirements and be selected by a team.

The development nevertheless represents an important moment in her cricket journey because it gives her a potential pathway to compete at a major domestic level.

Anaya’s long-term ambition remains much bigger: she hopes to one day represent India and win the World Cup.

That possibility would depend on multiple factors, including her cricketing development, selection decisions and the eligibility policies adopted by the BCCI and other relevant governing bodies.

The Wider Debate Around Inclusion in Women’s Sport

Anaya’s remarks also bring attention to a wider international discussion about participation and eligibility in women’s sport.

Sports governing bodies around the world have developed different approaches to eligibility, and policies can change as organisations review scientific evidence, legal considerations, athlete welfare and competitive fairness.

The issue is complex and often debated.

For athletes, clear policies are important because they provide certainty about the requirements for participation.

For governing bodies, eligibility frameworks involve balancing inclusion, fairness, safety and the specific competitive structure of each sport.

Anaya’s appeal for policies that are “inclusive, fair, and dignified” reflects her personal hopes for greater opportunities.

Whether the BCCI makes changes to its existing framework, however, would be a matter for the cricket board and any future policy decisions.

A World Cup Dream Still Alive

Despite the setbacks and uncertainty she has described, Anaya has not abandoned her biggest cricketing dream.

Her message is ultimately about returning to the sport and competing at the highest possible level.

She wants to play professional cricket. She wants opportunities to prove herself on the field. And, according to her own words, she hopes that one day she can represent India and contribute to a World Cup victory.

The Cricket Australia pathway has provided a new opportunity in that journey.

Whether it becomes the beginning of a long professional cricket career remains to be seen.

For now, Anaya Bangar has made her ambition clear: the challenges she says she has faced have not ended her sporting dream. Instead, she says she is ready to pursue it once again.
