A prestigious job and a six-figure salary can look like the definition of career success from the outside. For Sofia Jiang, however, four months at Morgan Stanley were enough to make her question whether that path was actually the one she wanted.

The 23-year-old had secured a coveted investment banking position after studying business and global affairs at Georgetown University. She had also interned at Morgan Stanley while at university and received a full-time offer before graduating.

Her first-year base salary was $110,000, roughly equivalent to ₹94 lakh at the exchange rate cited in reports.

But instead of spending years climbing the investment banking ladder, Jiang left after just four months.

Her reason was straightforward: she wanted to learn how to build a business.

Why Jiang left investment banking

Jiang’s interest in entrepreneurship had developed before she joined Morgan Stanley.

During her internship, she encountered a problem that eventually became the foundation for her own fashion idea. She found it difficult to locate workwear that was stylish, reasonably priced and did not require frequent dry cleaning.

That frustration led her to develop SofSet, a clothing brand built around the kind of workwear she felt was missing from the market.

At the same time, Jiang began documenting parts of her life on TikTok. Her content initially focused on her experience at Georgetown before expanding into videos about investment banking and early-career life.

The account eventually attracted more than 30,000 followers, giving Jiang an audience alongside her professional experience.

Still, leaving Morgan Stanley was not an easy decision.

She had worked hard to secure the position and understood the prestige and financial security associated with it. Jiang told Business Insider that she initially felt quitting such a highly sought-after job was “kind of silly and too risky.”

But she also worried that waiting several years would make it increasingly difficult to change direction.

A startup gave her practical experience

After leaving Morgan Stanley, Jiang did not immediately jump straight into running her own company.

A friend who had founded a venture capital-backed startup offered her a marketing position. Jiang accepted and joined the company the following week.

She spent approximately three to four months there, working with a small team and gaining practical experience in marketing, branding and startup operations.

The experience helped clarify what she wanted from her career.

Rather than focusing solely on traditional finance, Jiang wanted to work closer to founders, products and consumers — areas she believed would eventually help her build her own fashion business.

Cold emails helped open the next door

Jiang’s next opportunity came through persistent networking.

She began reaching out directly to people working across the fashion-tech sector, including recruiters, employees, founders and investors.

Her approach was simple: keep the messages short, introduce her background and explain either why she was interested in the company or how she might be able to contribute.

One of those cold emails eventually resulted in an introduction to the human resources team at a venture capital fund investing in fashion-tech startups.

That conversation ultimately connected Jiang with the CEO of her current company, leading to another job offer.

Her career trajectory had changed considerably in a relatively short period.

She earns less than she did at Morgan Stanley

The move has also come with a significant financial trade-off.

Jiang’s first-year base salary at Morgan Stanley was $110,000. Her current startup role pays substantially less.

She is nevertheless continuing to develop SofSet alongside her full-time work in fashion tech.

For Jiang, the lower salary represents the price of gaining experience that is more closely connected to the future she wants to build.

She acknowledged that it can be difficult not to compare her current earnings with what she was making in investment banking. But she believes the experience she is gaining now could prove more valuable over the long term.

‘I didn’t want the life’ ahead of me

The most significant realisation came when Jiang looked beyond the immediate benefits of investment banking and considered where the career might eventually take her.

She told Business Insider that she looked at senior professionals who represented the potential future version of her career and realised that lifestyle was not what she wanted.

“When I looked at the people who were my bosses in investment banking, who were technically going to be me 20 years out, I didn’t want the life that they had,” she said.

That realisation appears to have shaped her decision more than the salary she was giving up.

Jiang is now pursuing a less predictable route, combining a role in fashion technology with her own entrepreneurial project.

Her story highlights a broader tension facing young professionals: whether to prioritise the security and prestige of an established career or accept financial uncertainty in exchange for building skills and experience around a personal ambition.

For Jiang, the choice was ultimately about making sure her career was taking her somewhere she actually wanted to go.
