Daisy Shah Once Refused to Work With Salman Khan, Waited for a Heroine’s Role

Daisy Shah may have risen to prominence opposite Salman Khan in Jai Ho (2014), but her journey to that moment involved a bold decision that few would expect.

Long before she became the leading lady in Jai Ho, Daisy had declined an earlier offer to appear in Bodyguard (2011), despite the film being headlined by Salman.

From Dance Assistant to Aspiring Actor

Before entering films full-time, Daisy worked as an assistant to choreographer Ganesh Acharya. In interviews, she revealed that during her assistant choreographer days, she earned ₹5,000 per day, with work schedules varying between ten and thirty days a month.

Active in the industry since the early 2000s, she initially explored opportunities in Kannada cinema and featured in special song appearances. It was during this phase that she crossed paths with Salman while assisting on a song shoot.

Why She Said No to Bodyguard

Speaking about the sequence of events, Daisy clarified that she had not auditioned for Bodyguard but had auditioned for Jai Ho. She was already working in South Indian films when she returned to Mumbai and resumed assisting Ganesh Acharya during her free time.

While casting for Bodyguard, Salman offered her a role — the part that was eventually played by Hazel Keech. However, Daisy chose to decline.

According to her, the decision stemmed from her long-term aspirations. Coming from a dance background, she wanted a role that would showcase her performance abilities, particularly her dancing skills. She felt that if she were to collaborate with Salman Khan, it needed to be in a capacity that aligned with her ambitions as a leading actress.

“Nobody Says No to Bhai”

In another interview, Daisy admitted that turning down the opportunity felt risky.

She shared that after refusing the offer, she feared it might cost her any future chance of working with him. Given Salman’s stature in the industry, saying no was uncommon — but she stood by her choice.

Nearly a year and a half later, Salman contacted her again and asked her to audition for Jai Ho. She cleared the audition process and secured the lead role.

The Breakthrough With Jai Ho

Released in 2014, Jai Ho marked Daisy Shah’s major breakthrough in mainstream Hindi cinema. Despite mixed critical reception, the film performed strongly at the box office, reportedly earning close to ₹190 crore during its theatrical run.

Her journey — from dance assistant to leading lady — highlights a calculated career move rather than a missed opportunity. By waiting for a role that matched her ambitions, Daisy Shah carved her own path in an industry where such decisions can be high-stakes.
