A US-based woman has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram after revealing that what she believed was stubborn underarm fat turned out to be extra breast tissue — including an additional nipple. The discovery came just days after she delivered her second child.
In her video, the new mother, Jasmine, shared that five days postpartum, a lactation consultant examined the swelling and darkened patch in her armpit and identified it as “extra breast tissue” with a nipple.
A Postpartum Surprise
Jasmine said she had breastfed her first baby for over a year and felt confident about what to expect after childbirth. However, she was taken aback during the consultation when the specialist examined her underarm and confirmed the presence of what is medically known as additional breast tissue.
She explained that her armpits had always appeared slightly fuller and darkened during pregnancy — similar to the changes seen in nipples and areolas — but she assumed it was hormonal pigmentation or weight-related.

Her post drew widespread responses from women who reported experiencing similar conditions. Some described having axillary breast tissue that enlarges during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Others mentioned supernumerary nipples located along different parts of the torso.
A few users stated that the tissue could even produce milk while breastfeeding. Medical literature suggests that such cases, while uncommon, are not unheard of.
Doctor Explains the Medical Condition
Reacting to the viral discussion, Dr Rooma Sinha, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Apollo Hospitals, clarified that the symptoms described are consistent with the axillary tail of the breast.
According to Dr Sinha, the axillary tail is a natural extension of breast glandular tissue that extends into the underarm area. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, hormonal changes can cause this tissue to enlarge, darken, and in some cases, produce milk if active mammary glands are present.

What Is Axillary Breast Tissue?
The axillary tail (also known as the Tail of Spence) is a normal anatomical variation. In certain individuals, it may appear more prominent and can feel like:
- A lump or thickened area
- Swelling during pregnancy
- Tenderness during menstruation
- Darkened skin due to hormonal shifts
While typically harmless, it can cause discomfort during hormonal fluctuations.

Doctors state that no treatment is necessary unless the tissue causes:
- Persistent pain
- Recurrent swelling
- Cosmetic concerns
- Diagnostic uncertainty
Surgical removal remains an option for women who experience ongoing discomfort.
Why Awareness Matters
Health experts emphasise that pregnancy and postpartum changes can significantly alter breast tissue, including areas beyond the chest. Any new lump, swelling, or unusual change in the breast or underarm region should be evaluated by a medical professional to rule out other conditions.
Jasmine’s viral moment has sparked broader conversations around postpartum body changes, highlighting the importance of medical guidance and awareness rather than embarrassment or alarm.
