Gauri Khan, one of India’s most celebrated interior designers, has added another milestone to her portfolio—reviving her ancestral Dalhousie property into a luxury stay. Known for designing high-profile celebrity homes, including her iconic residence Mannat, Gauri has now transformed her family estate into a serene getaway named The Chestnut Grove.
The villa, a six-bedroom heritage estate, has been in Gauri’s family since 1933, originally acquired by her great-grandfather, Suraj Bhan Tiwari, and later belonging to her maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari. Spanning approximately 8,000 square feet, the property has hosted generations of summer vacations, family gatherings, and quiet mornings enveloped in mountain mist.
A Restoration With Heart
For Gauri, this was deeply personal. “This house is where my childhood summers unfolded—verandahs echoing with laughter, pine-scented air, evenings by the fireplace,” she has shared. Working closely with her cousin Rustam Tiwari, Gauri ensured the renovation honoured the heritage essence while introducing modern comforts. The result is a home that feels nostalgic yet contemporary, elegant but warm.
The villa opens to a sunlit living area framed by expansive glass windows, letting natural light illuminate wooden textures and earthy tones. A grand fireplace anchors the room, offering cozy respite during Dalhousie’s chilly months. Plush seating and subtle décor accents maintain a lived-in, inviting charm.
