Can Parents Really Be Our Friends? A Gen Z Lens On Navya Nanda And Shweta Bachchan’s Viral Clip

A resurfaced interview clip is sparking online conversation after Navya Naveli Nanda casually mentioned that she considers her mother Shweta Bachchan, and grandmum Jaya Bachchan, as her “friends.” It was an easy, affectionate remark — the kind Gen Z often uses when describing emotional closeness with parents. But Shweta instantly corrected her by saying, “I am not her friend, I am her parent.”

That one sentence — gentle but firm — opened up a deeper question: can parents and children truly be “friends,” or is parenting a separate role altogether?

Why Gen Z uses the word “friend” for parents

For younger adults today, calling a parent a friend is not about disrespect. It is about emotional safety. A friend — in 2025 phrasing — is someone who listens, not just lectures. Someone who is safe to confide in. Navya’s line seemed to honour closeness — not replace the parent role.

Why Shweta’s correction is not wrong either

A parent carries responsibility: boundaries, guidance, unpopular decisions, protection. Friendship is optional. Parenting is foundational. Shweta’s correction could be seen as her honouring the weight of that role.

Could she have just let the moment go?

Possibly. Because sometimes when young people describe parents as “friends,” we are not downgrading them — we are expanding what the relationship feels like.

But every family’s comfort zone is different. There is no universal rulebook for emotional language.

The real-world answer is in the middle

Modern parents are not distant figures. They are not “bestie buddies” either. The healthiest relationships often sit in the blended middle — warmth plus boundaries — not extremes.

Navya expressed closeness.
Shweta expressed responsibility.

Together, unintentionally, they reflected what most real families look like in this era — layered, hybrid, warm, imperfect, evolving.
