‘Hindi Actors Weren’t Ready To Take Risks’ – Gandhi Talks Took 25 Years to Make, Casting Spanned 10 Years

The silent cinematic journey of Gandhi Talks finally reached audiences on January 30, 2026, marking the culmination of a 25-year-long creative endeavor by director Kishor Pandurang Belekar. The film, entirely devoid of dialogues, relies on AR Rahman’s evocative score and the performances of stars like Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Siddharth Jadhav.

A Vision Two Decades in the Making

Speaking to OTTPlay, Belekar revealed the long and challenging path of bringing his silent-film vision to life.

“It is my 25th year I am travelling with this script. When you need to tell a story without dialogues, the visuals should be convincing and understandable to the audience. When I started writing, I wanted to go back to the roots of Indian cinema, to how it began as silent films. That is how Gandhi Talks was born.”

The director emphasized that truth and honesty are silent, contrasting with the noise of violence, power, and money.

Crafting a Story Without Dialogue

Creating a screenplay that communicates without words was no small feat. Belekar explained:

“It is not mime cinema or a sign language film, but a silent one. The audience should never feel the need for dialogues. The screenplay is structured so that songs and score drive the story.”

He drew inspiration from jazz, rock, and Indian classical music, improvising scenes while listening to music to overcome writer’s block.

Casting Challenges: 10 Years to Find the Right Actors

While the script took decades to perfect, casting posed another hurdle. Belekar said:

“When I approached actors in the Hindi film industry, nobody was ready to take the risk. They were skeptical about a story without dialogues and doubted if audiences would watch a silent film.”

Eventually, the director turned to regional talent. Vijay Sethupathi, known for taking bold roles, was the first to come on board. Following him, Arvind Swamy agreed to play the role of a “handsome businessman,” impressed by the story despite initial questions.

Belekar praised regional actors for their courage:

“They are open to different kinds of cinema. Many Hindi actors couldn’t understand the story, but regional talent embraced the challenge.”
