Basant Panchami marks the arrival of spring and is celebrated with devotion, colour, and food across India. Dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom and learning, the festival places special emphasis on the colour yellow—symbolising light, warmth, optimism, and abundance.

On this auspicious day, yellow foods are traditionally prepared and offered as bhog, representing a plentiful harvest and positive beginnings. Here are seven yellow-coloured dishes commonly enjoyed on Basant Panchami, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance.

1. Kesar Halwa

Kesar halwa is one of the most revered offerings during Saraswati Puja. Made with saffron, ghee, sugar, and semolina or flour, the dessert is rich in flavour and aroma. Saffron is considered sacred and pure, while ghee symbolises nourishment and warmth. Together, the dish is believed to invite abundance and prosperity.

2. Boondi Ladoo

Soft, fragrant boondi ladoos are an integral part of the festive spread. Prepared using gram flour and lightly coloured with turmeric, these ladoos are offered as bhog before being shared. They represent joy, celebration, and togetherness with the onset of spring.

3. Besan Barfi

This traditional sweet made from roasted gram flour, ghee, and sugar carries a natural golden hue that aligns perfectly with the festival’s theme. Often flavoured with cardamom, besan barfi symbolises wealth and well-being while offering warmth and nourishment.

4. Kesar Rice (Meethe Chawal)

Light, fragrant, and mildly sweet, kesar rice—also known as meethe chawal—is a popular Basant Panchami dish. The saffron-infused yellow colour reflects prosperity and happiness, making it a festive favourite for family gatherings.

5. Khichdi with Haldi

Yellow khichdi, prepared using rice, lentils, turmeric, and ghee, is a simple yet comforting sattvic dish. Turmeric is known for its healing properties, and the dish symbolises nourishment, balance, and well-being.

6. Haldi Doodh

Turmeric milk, a traditional Ayurvedic drink, is often offered during the festival. Known for its immunity-boosting and healing benefits, haldi doodh can be lightly sweetened and enjoyed warm, aligning with the festival’s focus on health and purity.

7. Corn Pulao

Yellow corn represents abundance and new beginnings, making corn pulao a fitting dish for Saraswati Puja. Sautéed with spices and combined with basmati rice, it offers both flavour and nutrition while staying true to the festival’s colour symbolism.
