I Waited Until the Children Grew Up to Divorce — Now I Feel Like I Wasted My Life

I was 30 when I met Josh. Until then, I’d been single for most of my adult life, and by the time I reached that milestone birthday, I had quietly decided that relationships simply weren’t for me. I had never particularly wanted to get married, and I was content—happy, even—immersed in my work in public relations.

Then Josh came along.

We worked together. He was funny, intelligent and endlessly interesting. Most importantly, he made me laugh. What began as an easy friendship slowly shifted. Two years in, after a Christmas party and one too many drinks, we kissed. Three years later, we were married.

At the time, it felt wonderful. I believed I was marrying my best friend—and in many ways, I was.

But with the benefit of hindsight, I can see what I didn’t want to admit then: I never truly desired him.

When Love Isn’t the Same as Desire

I liked Josh deeply. I grew to love him because he was kind, dependable and genuinely good. But I never felt that spark people talk about. I never experienced that physical pull—the rush when someone walks into a room, the instinctive thought of there’s my gorgeous, irresistible husband.

I told myself that kind of passion was overrated. That stability mattered more. That real relationships were built on friendship, not fireworks.

So I stayed.

Staying “For the Children”

When our children arrived, leaving felt impossible. I convinced myself that waiting until they were older was the responsible thing to do. I focused on being a good mother, a supportive partner, a functional family unit.

Years passed quietly. From the outside, our life looked fine. But inside, I felt myself slowly disappearing.

I wasn’t miserable every day—but I wasn’t fulfilled either. I ignored the growing sense that I had settled for a life that didn’t fully belong to me.

By the time the children grew up and no longer needed us in the same way, I finally admitted the truth: I had been waiting for permission to choose myself.

The Cost of Waiting

The divorce, when it finally came, wasn’t dramatic. It was calm, mutual and long overdue. Josh deserved someone who desired him completely. I deserved a life that felt honest.

But now, looking back, the regret is sharp.

I regret the years I spent telling myself that wanting more was selfish. I regret believing that duty should come at the expense of personal truth. Most of all, I regret waiting so long that I now feel as though I’ve lived someone else’s life.

A Difficult Truth

This isn’t a story about blame. Josh wasn’t the wrong person—he just wasn’t my person. And staying wasn’t a mistake made in ignorance; it was a choice made out of fear, responsibility and social expectation.

But I’ve learned this much: staying in a life that doesn’t fit you slowly erodes you, even if it looks perfectly acceptable from the outside.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t rush into divorce. But I also wouldn’t postpone honesty for decades.

Because time doesn’t pause while you wait to be brave.
