For decades, perimenopause — the hormonal transition leading up to menopause — was widely believed to begin in a woman’s 40s. However, a growing number of women in India are now reporting symptoms as early as their early to mid-30s. From irregular periods and mood changes to sleep disturbances and unexplained weight gain, this shift is raising important questions about women’s health in modern times.

Medical experts suggest that a combination of lifestyle, environmental, and biological factors may be accelerating hormonal changes earlier than previously expected.

Lifestyle Stress and Hormonal Strain

Fast-paced urban living has dramatically altered daily routines. Long work hours, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, and sedentary lifestyles are placing sustained pressure on the endocrine system. Elevated stress levels increase cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, which can interfere with estrogen and progesterone production. Over time, this imbalance may trigger perimenopause-like symptoms well before the traditional age range.

Environmental Toxins and Hormone Disruption

Exposure to environmental pollutants has increased significantly. Chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, cosmetics, and air pollution often act as endocrine disruptors — substances that mimic or block natural hormones. Research increasingly links these toxins to earlier ovarian ageing, cycle irregularities, and reduced hormonal resilience in younger women.

Rising Prevalence of Metabolic and Hormonal Disorders

Health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and thyroid disorders are becoming more common among younger Indian women. These conditions disrupt hormonal regulation and may accelerate reproductive ageing, making perimenopausal symptoms appear earlier than expected.

The Role of Genetics

Family history continues to play a significant role. Women whose mothers experienced early menopause are statistically more likely to undergo an earlier perimenopausal transition themselves. Genetics, combined with modern lifestyle stressors, may amplify this risk.

Medical Interventions at Younger Ages

Certain medical procedures and treatments can also contribute. Hysterectomies, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments may lead to a sudden or premature decline in hormone levels. With improved diagnostics and earlier medical interventions, more women are encountering these changes at a younger age.

Why Early Perimenopause Awareness Matters

Perimenopause is not limited to hot flashes. Symptoms often include brain fog, anxiety, recurrent urinary tract infections, hair thinning, bone density loss, fatigue, and unexplained weight changes. Women in their 30s may dismiss these signs or attribute them to work stress or lifestyle, delaying appropriate care.

According to a Menoveda survey involving 20,000 women, 63 percent were unaware of the stages of menopause altogether. This lack of awareness often deepens physical and emotional distress.

What Women Can Do

Experts emphasise early preventive care and awareness:

  • Build strong lifestyle foundations with balanced nutrition and regular movement
  • Prioritise sleep quality and stress management
  • Reduce exposure to plastics and highly processed foods
  • Track menstrual cycles and symptom patterns
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen

Early perimenopause is increasingly viewed as a public health wake-up call. Greater awareness, timely diagnosis, and supportive healthcare systems can significantly improve long-term outcomes. Recognising the signs in one’s 30s may be key to protecting hormonal, bone, and mental health in the decades ahead.
